Nurse Lead

Contract: Permanent Location: Herriot Hospice, Thirsk Hours: Full‑time, 37.5 hours per week (7 days a week, including nights and weekends) Salary: £47,533.95 per annum FTE (45% unsocial hours) Closing date: Monday 6th July 2026

Our family of services includes Herriot Hospice Homecare, Just ‘B’ and Saint Michael’s Hospice. We are an independent charity focused on improving the quality of life for people living with terminal illness, bereavement, and mental health concerns.

Your role as a Nurse Lead

Lead by example in delivering high‑quality, holistic care within our inpatient unit, supporting patients, families, and colleagues.

  • Lead and manage the inpatient nursing team to deliver exceptional hospice care.
  • Ensure safe, effective, and patient‑centred care at all times.
  • Co‑ordinate day‑to‑day operational management of the unit.
  • Support, supervise, and develop nursing staff and Health Care Assistants.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement, learning, and professional excellence.
  • Ensure compliance with clinical governance, infection prevention, health and safety, and regulatory standards.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary colleagues to achieve the best outcomes for patients and families.
  • Lead service developments and support the effective implementation of change initiatives.

About you

We’re looking for a compassionate leader with:

  • Registered nurse status with valid NMC registration and at least 2 years post‑qualification experience.
  • Experience in specialist palliative care.
  • Strong communication skills and a calm, empathetic approach to complex care situations.
  • Experience of effective line management and of teaching, coaching, and mentoring staff.
