We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Area Transport Manager to cover the East Area of the County (Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale) and play a key role in ensuring our fleet is safe, efficient and fit for purpose. We operate a fleet of about 1200 vehicles across North Yorkshire, consisting of a variety of vehicles from refuse collection vehicles, gritters, road sweepers, minibuses, tippers, cars and vans.
We work closely with NY Highways Ltd and other Brierley Group Companies and provide a maintenance service to those companies where required. We also operate about 200 vehicles on its Goods Operator Licence and 105 minibuses on Transport Act Permits. These vehicles must be operated under stringent undertakings made to the office of the Traffic Commissioners. The safe operation and availability of vehicles is vital to ensure that services can carry out their functions without impediment, maintain road safety and protect the reputation of the Council.
We have PSV Permits and a standard LGV Operator's Licence that require statutory compliance. Non-compliance with statutory undertakings can result in disciplinary action by the Traffic Commissioner whereby they may suspend, curtail or revoke our Operator's Licence preventing the Council from operating.

- Provide leadership on fleet related matters across your geographical area, working closely with Waste and Street Scene and Parks and Grounds operational teams.
- Act as a technical and operational decision maker on large goods vehicle and driver operations, and a trusted advisor on transport legislation and best practice.
Qualifications
- Experience in fleet and transport operations, with strong knowledge of running safe, compliant and reliable vehicle services.
- Working knowledge of Operator Licence requirements, DVSA guidance and transport legislation, with a clear understanding of effective vehicle and driver compliance.
- Background in LGV operations and maintenance arrangements.
- Eligible to act as Transport Manager, or willing to work towards the qualification.
- Confident in making practical decisions, offering clear advice and supporting operational teams with workable solutions.
- Comfortable collaborating with managers and colleagues across services, building relationships and influencing good practice.
- Positive, proactive and collaborative approach, with strong communication and organisational skills.
The successful candidate will be committed to delivering great service, keeping people safe and continually improving ways of working.
