About the role
North Yorkshire is England’s largest county, covering over 3000 square miles. Home to school transport is, therefore, a large and complex operation. We currently provide home to school transport for over 10,000 pupils travelling to over 300 schools and academies in North Yorkshire and neighbouring areas. Annual expenditure on the service currently exceeds £50 million, which makes home to school transport the Council’s third largest spending area.
This is a new post created through a restructure within the Children and Young People’s Service and brings together responsibility for coordinating all of our home to school transport arrangements. It offers an exciting opportunity to lead and transform the Council’s arrangements for Home to School Travel, whilst ensuring that we continue to meet our statutory responsibilities.
We are seeking someone with a detailed knowledge and experience of Home to School Transport services who is able to provide expert leadership within the service and help to drive the changes that are required within our transformation programme. Working directly to the Head of School Organisation and Transport, you will manage a small team of staff dealing with SEN transport and liaise closely with colleagues across the Council involved with school admissions and the commissioning of transport to ensure that we are fulfilling our statutory responsibilities.
Key Requirements
- You will have a detailed knowledge of the statutory requirements for providing home to school transport and have:
- Excellent financial, performance and people management skills
- A track record of building strong professional relationships
- Strategic thinking combined with hands on, solution focused approach
- A leadership style that is compassionate, inclusive and outcome‑focused
