We’re looking for a highly motivated individual to join our Planning Operations team as a Senior Planning Assistant, with a particular focus on GIS expertise and spatial data improvement.
Our Planning Services team plays a vital role in shaping the natural and built environment across the county. We ensure future development needs are met sustainably, helping to create vibrant, well-designed places where people can live, work, and thrive. As one of the largest and most diverse planning functions in the country, we cover an exceptional geographical area. From stunning national parks and areas of outstanding natural beauty to lively market towns, rural villages, and growing urban centres, our work is both varied and impactful. Joining us means contributing to projects that truly make a difference to the communities we serve.
As part of the Operations Team, you’ll support essential planning functions and play a key role in helping us deliver an accurate, efficient and customer focused service.
This role has a strong focus on GIS and spatial data, making it an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys technical work, problem solving, and using data to support decision making.
You will:
- Act as a GIS superuser, helping to develop, maintain and improve our spatial datasets
- Lead and support spatial data improvement projects across Planning
- Manage and interrogate complex datasets to support planning casework, policy work and business intelligence
- Support project work across the service, helping to coordinate meetings, workshops and engagement activities
- Work with colleagues across the service to help improve systems, processes and data quality
We’re looking for someone who is:
- Skilled and confident with GIS (ArcGIS, QGIS or similar)
- Comfortable working with large, complex datasets
- Analytical, detail focused and able to present information clearly
- Able to manage their own workload and work collaboratively with others
- A good communicator who can build effective working relationships
- Keen to contribute to service improvements and new ways of working
Experience in planning or building control is desirable, but not essential. We’re more interested in your technical ability, willingness to learn, and enthusiasm for applying GIS within a planning environment.
Generous Annual Leave: 28 days of holiday (pro-rata), increasing to 34 days after 5 years’ service – plus public holidays.
Pension Scheme: Save for your future with our generous Local Government Pension Scheme.
Fitness Discounts: Discounted Gym memberships at various gyms across the county.
Lifestyle Savings: Enjoy a wide range of discounts at hundreds of popular high-street and online retailers.
And more: Additional wellbeing support, employee assistance, and development opportunities.
