We are seeking a proactive and motivated Operations Officer to help lead our Waste and Street Scene services, ensuring the safe, efficient and effective delivery of frontlineenvironmental services across North Yorkshire.

About the Role

As an Operations Officer, you will play a key role in the day-to-day management of frontline teams delivering essential waste collection and street cleansing services.

You will be responsible for coordinating resources, managing operational challenges in real time, and ensuring services continue to meet the needs of residents and businesses.

Working closely with operational management, you will provide leadership to teams, support service improvements, and ensure compliance with health and safety legislation, transport regulations and council policies.

This is a varied and hands-on role that requires strong organisational skills, effective people management and the ability to make sound decisions in a fast-paced operational environment.

Typical working days and hours currently vary between 5:30 am and 5:30 pm shifts, you need to be prepared to start early. Some weekend and bank holiday working may be required.

  • Roles and Responsibilities
  • To ensure the work allocated to the Waste and Street Scene Teams is completed to a high standard
  • To co-ordinate mandatory training around service priorities, devising and implementing training schedules with colleagues
  • Identify opportunities for service improvement, efficiencies and innovation
  • To be responsible for the monitoring of the performance of services and making recommendations to management, regarding the increased efficiency of those services
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety requirements and safe systems of work
  • Provide leadership and direction to teams and agency staff at all times on legal requirements
  • To motivate individuals and teams ensuring best practice is deployed across the waste management service area through regular dialogue and formal appraisals as individuals and teams
  • Monitor team performance, address conduct, attendance and performance matters, and support staff development.
  • What We’re Looking For
  • Experience working within waste management, street cleansing, parks, environmental services or a similar operational environment.
  • Experience supervising or managing staff.
  • Knowledge of health and safety legislation and operational compliance requirements.
  • Experience operating and/or managing Operator Licence vehicles.
  • Strong organisational and resource-planning skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to make decisions and prioritise effectively under pressure.
  • Knowledge of transport legislation, driver hours regulations and licence categories
  • Full UK driving licence.
