The North York Moors National Park Authority helps to look after one of the most phenomenal parts of the British Isles. Filled with beautiful moorlands and fantastic woodland, the North York Moors is a unique area with a diversity of landscape and wildlife. The Active Travel programme is a joint venture between North York Moors National Park Authority and Active Travel England to increase sustainable access to the National Park and improve car-free connections between attractions and local transport hubs.
We are now looking for an Active Travel Officer to join us on a full-time basis, for an 18‑month fixed‑term contract till September 2027, with potential for extension, depending on funding.
The Benefits

The Role
As an Active Travel Officer, you will lead the co‑ordination and delivery of our Active Travel programme, improving opportunities for walking, cycling and wheeling across the North York Moors National Park. You will project manage a range of Active Travel initiatives, working with partners including Active Travel England, Highway Authorities, landowners and community groups to develop route and infrastructure improvements. Alongside contributing to wider access and recreation initiatives, you will help strengthen internal knowledge and processes to improve Active Travel delivery and reduce reliance on external consultancy. Additionally, you will:
- Monitor project milestones, risks and budgets
- Develop and maintain a monitoring database using trail counter data and other sources
- Support the preparation and submission of funding bids
- Help establish a steering group to support consultation and delivery of the Active Travel agenda
About You
To be considered as an Active Travel Officer, you will need:
- Experience of formulating, project managing and delivering Access and Recreation projects or programmes
- Experience of accessing and securing funding in a similar sector
- Experience of procuring specialist work via a tender process
- Knowledge of current legislation, policy, practice and funding in relation to project development in access and recreation or a similar field of work
- Strong public speaking and presentation skills
- A full, valid driving licence and access to a vehicle (or access to a means of mobility support to meet the travel demands of the post)
