The North York Moors National Park Authority helps to care for one of the UK's most distinctive protected landscapes. Spanning 554 square miles, the National Park is home to expansive heather moorland, woodland, remote dales, historic villages and dramatic coastline, and plays an important role in supporting nature, communities and sustainable access for visitors.

We are now looking for two Area Rangers to join us in Helmsley on a full-time basis, working 37 hours per week. One role is permanent, and one is for a fixed-term contract ending on 31 March 2027.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced countryside, access or conservation professional with leadership skills to join one of the UK's most valued protected landscapes. You'll have the chance to play a practical role in supporting conservation, recreation and community-focused initiatives across our National Park, whilst developing your expertise within the environmental and conservation sector.

What's more, you'll discover an organisation that is proud, professional, welcoming and collaborative, and you will play a key role in conserving, enhancing and championing the spectacular landscape of the North York Moors. The Authority has recently completed the construction of a new depot in Helmsley which will provide you with a modern and safe working environment. A new headquarters/office accommodation is being constructed adjacent to the depot which will open in late 2027.

The Role

As an Area Ranger, you will support the delivery of recreation, access and conservation work and projects across the National Park. Working closely with the Area Manager and wider Ranger Team, you will help develop and deliver annual work programmes, prioritising maintenance and improvement works, whilst supporting wider countryside and recreation projects. You will also build and lead a small team that includes a Maintenance Ranger, a Level 4 Apprentice and a number of skilled volunteers. In particular, you will support the Apprentice in the delivery and achievement of their course, imparting your skills and knowledge. Working collaboratively with landowners, local communities and stakeholders, you will support positive visitor experiences and practical conservation activity across the National Park.

Additionally, you will:

  • Support the development of funding opportunities and project objectives
  • Ensure our safe working practices are followed
  • Support rights of way management internally and with the public
  • Make sure we are delivering positive communication to the public
  • Contribute to the development of the volunteer offer

About You

To be considered as an Area Ranger, you will need:

  • Certified competence in the use of power tools and equipment
  • Knowledge and experience of Health & Safety legislation, particularly relating to site risk assessments and working procedures
  • Effective management skills, with the ability to lead and motivate staff and volunteers, delegate work effectively and manage contractors
  • Good interpersonal, negotiation and diplomacy skills
  • Enthusiasm for protected landscapes and the benefits they bring to people and the environment
  • A positive approach to working with external funds, volunteering and community engagement
  • Excellent IT skills across a range of applications
  • A flexible approach to working hours and days
  • A full, clean driving licence and flexibility to work across the wider area
