About the Role

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is one of the world’s greatest heritage railways – a living museum and registered charity running steam and diesel services through the heart of the North York Moors National Park.

Behind the scenes, a dedicated team of staff and volunteers keeps the railway running, and that’s where you come in.

We are looking for an enthusiastic IT Apprentice to join us at Pickering.

You’ll gain real, hands‑on experience across our departments while working towards a nationally recognised Level 3 Business Administrator qualification – all while earning a wage.

  • What you’ll be doing
  • Act as the first point of contact for staff and volunteers, triaging and responding to support tickets and resolving everyday technical problems promptly.
  • Deliver remote support to end users using Team Viewer, as well as on‑site support across our locations.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues with printing, Wi‑Fi, peripherals and general desktop hardware.
  • Set up, configure and deploy laptops and Windows 11 devices for new and existing users.

Maintain Windows Updates and troubleshoot issues, migrate users between laptops as necessary.

  • Manage Active Directory user accounts, including provisioning, password resets and two‑factor authentication (2FA) support.
  • Administer and support Microsoft 365, Outlook, Teams and Exchange email, including mail filtering systems.
  • Support and maintain Share Point and One Drive for end users (essential).
  • Manage and maintain NYMR Mobile i Phone and i Pad hardware, giving end user support for 2FA application, Outlook and general service issues.
  • Offering end user support for specific and custom NYMR Applications, intranet services, web access and basic user issues.
  • Maintain and offer real‑time support and meeting connection resolution for our OWL Video Conferencing systems.
  • Managing and maintaining connection and service issues on our IP CCTV system running an array of POE IP CCTV Cameras.

Supporting key business users in the retrieval of critical safety related footage from CCTV servers.

  • Support end users in retail outlets, booking offices and tea rooms with day‑to‑day technical needs.

Managing 2nd line ticket escalations with our EPOS provider who provides the end‑support to our Till users.

  • Manage IT inventory, including desktop docks, monitors, network connections and peripherals.
  • Maintain anti‑virus and anti‑malware compliance across the estate.
  • Keep accurate records of equipment, assets and support activity.
  • Support small projects, applying project management principles developed through the apprenticeship to help scope, plan and monitor delivery.

The apprenticeship runs for 14 months (plus End‑Point Assessment) and combines on‑the‑job learning with off‑the‑job training delivered through monthly face‑to‑face and online sessions.

You’ll spend at least 20% of your working time on off‑the‑job learning, attending our training provider’s centre in Malton one day a month, plus one online session a month with your trainer.

Every 10 weeks you’ll have a progress review with your trainer and line manager.

You’ll build a portfolio of evidence from your work at the railway and complete an End‑Point Assessment (knowledge test, project presentation and professional discussion) to achieve your certificate.

If you haven’t achieved GCSE grade 4/C (or equivalent) in English and/or Maths, don’t worry – you’ll be fully supported to complete Functional Skills as part of the apprenticeship.

About You

  • Who we’re looking for
  • Ideally four GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, including English and Maths (or willingness to complete Functional Skills).
  • Good communication skills and the confidence to interact with people at all levels.
  • Well organised, with attention to detail and a willingness to learn.
  • A genuine commitment to completing the full apprenticeship programme.
  • Experience of admin, customer service or volunteering, and an interest in heritage railways, would be a bonus, but is not essential.

What we offer

  • A supportive team and a truly unique working environment in the North York Moors National Park.
  • Full training and mentoring throughout your apprenticeship.
  • The opportunity to work in one of the UK’s most scenic locations within the North York Moors National Park.

  • Free standard travel on NYMR.
