Course Manager North Wilts Golf Club – Wiltshire – England
Location: North Wilts Golf Club
Contract: Full Time, Permanent
Hours: 40 hours per week (variable work pattern, includes some weekend working)
Reports to: The Club Secretary and elected Executive Members
About North Wilts Golf Club
North Wilts is a wonderful example of a downland golf course; it will test even the lowest handicap golfer. Comprising stunning scenery, a warm welcome and a course that has hosted a number of National and Regional competitions, North Wilts GC is one of the finest Clubs in Wiltshire. The Club was founded in 1890 and is now wholly owned by its members. It is situated on the downs midway between Calne and Devizes, close to Marlborough and easily accessible by several major roads. North Wilts Golf Club is a forward-thinking club with a clear vision to develop and improve the course every year. In the last few years, the Club has renovated its professional shop, installed a state-of-the-art golf studio, upgraded its course paths and tees and completed a course design and irrigation improvement review using leading market specialists. With an active investment programme that has already seen significant improvements on and off the golf course, an opportunity has arisen for a new Course Manager to join our talented team.

The Course Manager is responsible for overseeing the maintenance of all areas of the golf course, including tees, fairways, greens, bunkers, and rough. They ensure the golf course is safe, aesthetically pleasing, and in optimal condition for play. This role also includes managing staff, budgeting, and working with other departments to maintain the course's high standards.
Key Attributes:
- Minimum of 3 to 5 years' experience as a deputy/head greenkeeper/course manager
- Qualified to NVQ Level 3 or higher in Greenkeeping & Sports Turf Management
- Evidence of Active and Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
- Spraying certification PA1, 2 and 6 CS30, 31 Chainsaw
- Strong knowledge of turf management, irrigation systems, agronomy, disease control, and machinery operation
- Project management and organisational skills
- Strong strategic and budgetary planning skills
- Excellent IT skills and ability to manage key golf course performance indicators
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Good working knowledge and ability to implement Health and Safety processes and legislation
- Ability to work as part of a team and develop and motivate the team's individual competencies
- Ability to work constructively and efficiently with external specialists and or contractors as and when required.
Qualifications:
- Education: A degree or diploma in turf management, horticulture, or a related field is often preferred.
- Experience: Previous experience in greenkeeping or turf management, with at least a few years in a supervisory role, is typically required.
- Certifications: Certifications in pesticide application and other relevant greenkeeping courses is required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Course Maintenance: Supervise and carry out routine maintenance of all turf areas, including mowing, fertilizing, irrigation, aeration, and pest control. Oversee the care and maintenance of course landscaping (trees, shrubs, etc). Maintain and improve the greens, fairways, tees, bunkers, and rough, ensuring they meet professional standards.
- Staff Management: Lead a team of greenkeepers, assigning daily tasks, setting work schedules, and ensuring the team's efficiency. Provide training, guidance, and development opportunities for staff. Ensure that safety standards are followed and that staff safely use the correct equipment and machinery.
- Equipment Management: Ensure all equipment is in good working order and schedule maintenance and repairs as needed. Oversee inventory management for tools, chemicals, fertilizers, and other materials.
- Budgeting & Administration: Prepare and manage the budget for the maintenance of the course, ensuring costs are controlled. Keep records of maintenance activities, weather conditions, and treatments applied to the course. Advise requirements for Capital Expenditure of new or replacement machinery.
- Health & Safety/Environmental: Ensure that all health, safety and environmental regulations are followed, including appropriate Risk Assessments and the proper storage and use of chemicals and pesticides. Regularly inspect the course for potential hazards and make recommendations for improvements.
- Course Improvement & Development: Work with the golf course management to develop and implement long-term maintenance and improvement plans. Collaborate on any major course redesigns or renovations and participate in the planning and execution.
- Communication: Liaise with golf course management, other departments, and members of the golf club to ensure smooth operations. Refer any complaints or issues related to course conditions and work on solutions to the correct executive team in a timely manner.
- Customer Experience: Ensure that the course remains visually appealing and plays at a high standard. Monitor player feedback regarding course conditions and ensure any concerns are addressed.
