Specialist CYP Asthma Practitioner in Woking

Location: NICS Respiratory Clinic, Woking Community Hospital

Contract: 12 months fixed-term, 37.5 hours per week

Salary: Equivalent to Band 7

Following national work on the National Bundle of Care for CYP with asthma and the NICE guidelines 2024, NICS offers an exciting opportunity for a highly experienced asthma practitioner with relevant experience working with children and young people with asthma. The role aims to provide targeted interventions to CYP patients in Primary Care at the highest risk of an asthma attack, complementing the NHS long‑term plan and responding to recent HSIB and coroner’s recommendations.

Main duties and responsibilities:

• Liaise with the multi‑disciplinary team to ensure best possible care outcomes, developing flexible and innovative approaches for patients and families.
• Support CYP asthma diagnostic pathways through emerging diagnostic hubs.
• Lead implementation of a risk stratification tool to identify CYP most at risk of an asthma exacerbation.
• Support escalation in Integrated Care System (ICS) pathways where outcomes need improvement to meet national standards.
• Champion adherence to national guidelines and good practice.
• For children and young people admitted with asthma, facilitate safe discharge and follow‑up arrangements via post‑attack reviews.
• Stay current with new products, protocols, medications and devices; disseminate research findings as appropriate.
• Collate and use data to influence commissioning of future services.
• Promote up‑to‑date education and expert advice for health professionals, families and carers.
• Assist senior specialist in delivering the asthma care bundle for the IC.
• Support the development of an IC clinical leadership network.
• Champion patient‑centred care and embed patient and public involvement in decision making.

• Foster partnership and cross‑boundary working with primary, secondary, community and tertiary services.

Qualifications:

• Educated to degree level in a relevant scientific, nursing, allied health or pharmacy discipline, or equivalent experience.
• ARTP accredited paediatric spirometry and interpretation; advanced inhaler technique trainer.
• Prescribing qualification.
• MSC in a relevant field (preferred).
• Teaching qualification (preferred).

Experience:

• Specialist clinical skills, knowledge and expertise in the care and management of children with asthma, minimum tier 3 level as detailed in the National CYP Asthma Capability Framework.
• Strong knowledge of pharmacological treatment of asthma.
• Experience carrying out face‑to‑face CYP asthma reviews and comprehensive respiratory assessment.
• Good understanding of health system dynamics and data use for quality improvement.
• Experience as a clinical leader and working both independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to develop, apply and review evidence‑based approaches to decision making.
• Experience delivering education sessions for multi‑agency child‑focused workforce and other stakeholders.
• Experience conducting research and audit.
