The role:

  • Manage a full caseload of complex and often sensitive legal matters within one or more specialisms of the team.
  • Authorised under the Legal Services Act 2007 to conduct litigation.
  • The Adult Social Care and Litigation team covers Adult Social Care, Housing, Education, Employment and Litigation.
  • Specialise in general civil litigation; may support other areas of the team where needed.
  • Experience in Housing Law is desirable.
  • Personal responsibility for a caseload of complex and non‑complex legal work; act as subject expert with support and supervision from senior lawyers.
  • Handle a variety of litigation matters: debt recovery, judicial review, homelessness litigation and other civil litigation (non‑personal injury).
  • Help supervise and contribute to the development of Trainee Lawyers.
  • Report to a senior lawyer within the team.
  • Provide proactive, solution‑focused advice aligning with Council priorities and policies.
  • Advise on legal matters relevant to public and local government law, including information governance and public law challenges.
  • Support the Director of City Law & Governance as Monitoring Officer and promote Nolan Principles, escalating matters as appropriate.
  • Externally commission legal work for the Council where required, ensuring value for money and high‑quality advice and representation.
  • Play an active role in raising awareness of current and proposed law and practice affecting the Council.
  • Participate in delivery of projects and programmes in Legal Services and/or corporate.
  • Support the Senior Lawyer in developing legal procedures and policies.
