Are you interested in working in an Ambulance environment and achieving a nationally recognised qualification? You can ‘earn while you learn’ whilst training to be an Emergency Medical Technician. The Trust is recruiting to our apprenticeship programme for Emergency Medical Technicians across the North West region for 2026/2027.

Salary and progression

As an apprentice you will receive 80% of the top of Band 4 (£24,465 per annum) for the first 12 months. In month 13, you will move to 85% of the top of Band 4 (£25,637 per annum). Upon completion of your apprenticeship, you will be eligible to move onto a full Emergency Medical Technician contract of employment. The salary for this will be Band 4 which is £27,485 - £30,162 per annum plus an appropriate unsocial hour’s payment under section 2 for Agenda for Change terms and conditions.

Role details

As an apprentice you will work alongside other EMT staff and Paramedics initiating and delivering appropriate care and effective treatment to patients in a pre-hospital environment. During your apprenticeship you will be applying appropriate skills and knowledge to safely provide care for patients, working within the scope of practice for the role. You will benefit from dedicated educational and clinical support from your Educational Practitioners, managers and crew, to develop you through your apprenticeship programme to successful completion.

Please note that we cannot guarantee that a vacancy will be available at your local ambulance station, but if successful we will aim to place you as close to your home address as possible depending on where the vacancies are. Please do not apply if you do not have the C1 provisional on your licence when you click submit on your application. You will need to provide your qualifications prior to the shortlisting stage; if you do not have the certificates, you will need to request them from the exam boards. If you have been shortlisted to attend an interview for the Apprentice EMT1 role within the last 2 months then you will not need to submit another application for this position, as that recruitment is still ongoing. Visa sponsorship is not possible for this role for either candidates or existing employees. This role does not meet the eligibility criteria for Skilled Worker/ Health and Care Worker visas as set out at gov.uk. Graduate visa holders should have no expectation of long-term employment through sponsorship. Additionally, your visa conditions and validity period must allow you to work in the role and for a suitable period to allow training and execution without requiring sponsorship.

Why NWAS and the role

North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust provides 24 hour, 365 days a year accident and emergency services to those in need of emergency medical treatment and transport. Our highly skilled staff provide life-saving care to patients in the community and take people to hospital or a place of care if needed. We also provide non-emergency patient transport services for those patients who require non-emergency transport to and from hospital and who are unable to travel unaided because of their medical condition or clinical need. Alongside the other emergency services, we also work to ensure the safety of the public and treatment of patients in the event of a major incident. We also deliver the NHS 111 service in the North West. NHS 111 replaced NHS Direct in 2013. This service was introduced to make it easier for people to access local NHS healthcare services in England. It provides non-emergency medical help fast, and is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Prerequisites and application process

  • Proof of certificates for the qualifications detailed on the job specification. This is a requirement to enable you to qualify for the apprenticeship. Please refer to the FAQs regarding qualifications.
  • Driving Licence – Full C1 driving licence with no more than 3 endorsement points. In exceptional circumstances a maximum of 6 points may be considered. Any applicants with a drink driving conviction in the last five years will not be considered for the role.
  • Business email addresses for your references dating back for a period of three years.

  • Invite shortlisted candidates to an interview on weekends in February. Dates may differ depending on numbers.
  • Driving Assessments will be from March.
