Role Description
This full‑time Strategic Transport Planning Manager role is a hybrid position, with a primary base in the Tyneside area and flexibility for some work from home.
The role involves leading the development of transport strategies and plans that support sustainable growth, improved connectivity, and better outcomes for residents and businesses.
Daily responsibilities include overseeing transport policy and projects, analysing data and evidence, preparing reports and business cases, and coordinating with internal teams, elected members, regional partners, and external stakeholders.
The postholder will manage work programmes, contribute to funding bids and financial planning for transport initiatives, and ensure alignment with local, regional, and national transport priorities.
The role also includes guiding junior staff, monitoring performance against objectives, and promoting innovation and best practice in strategic transport planning.
Qualifications
- Strong business planning and strategic planning skills, with experience developing and implementing transport or infrastructure plans.
- Advanced analytical skills, including the ability to interpret transport data, assess impacts, and produce evidence‑based recommendations.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders, present complex information clearly, and prepare high‑quality reports and briefings.
- Understanding of finance in a public sector or transport context, including budgeting, funding bids, cost–benefit analysis, and value‑for‑money assessments.
- Experience in transport planning, urban or regional planning, or a related field, preferably within local government or a similar environment.
- Relevant degree or professional qualification in transport planning, planning, engineering, geography, public policy, or a closely related discipline.
- Ability to lead projects and teams, manage competing priorities, and work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary setting.
- Knowledge of UK transport policy, sustainability principles, and inclusive transport design is highly beneficial.
