Overview

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join the Finance Service at North Somerset Council on a 12 month fixed term basis to provide maternity cover. This post sits within the Corporate Services Directorate which provides a wide range of internal support services to the wider organisation. The Finance Service provides a diverse range of financial services to support budget managers and others in more technical work to support S151 duties.

Role: Finance Officer (CSD & HSC) supporting the Corporate Services and Healthy & Sustainable Communities Directorates. The finance team provides financial support and advice to budget holders, service managers and Heads of Service to enable efficient, effective and comprehensive financial services across two directorates.

We are looking for someone who can interact with budget managers and finance colleagues, with excellent interpersonal skills. The post is fixed term for 12 months and offers career progression subject to qualifications and experience as detailed in the supporting Person Specification. Work style is described below and may be adjusted during induction and learning periods.

Responsibilities

  • Support managers and budget holders in service departments with the monitoring of their budgets.
  • Support the production of financial returns, reports and grant claims.
  • Assist with journals or virements.
  • Assist with budget setting and the preparation of final accounts.

Work Style and Location

North Somerset Council offers a hybrid working environment with four distinct work styles. Roles may be Mobile/Field Worker, with options including:

  • Home working
  • 1-2 days per month in the office
  • In-office for meetings or focused work, with virtual connections to the team. Portable technology supports work on the go.

The role is primarily home-based, with 1-2 days per month in the office. The successful candidate should be self-motivated, able to prioritise and manage workload to meet deadlines. During induction, more time in the office may be required to support learning and development.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Excellent communications skills; ability to positively embrace and influence change and build effective relationships with finance and non-finance colleagues.
  • Numerate, well organized and detail-oriented; experience in an accounting environment in the public sector is advantageous.
  • Applicants may be near the start of their career and should be passionate about the services they support and keen to understand the business models underpinning those services.
  • Ideally studying towards the Association of Accounting Technicians qualification; transferable skills and training support will be provided.
