Waste Services are seeking a motivated and experienced Team Leader - Transfer Operations to support the effective management of waste infrastructure assets and the daily delivery of high-quality waste services. This role is critical in ensuring the safe, efficient and compliant acceptance and transfer of waste materials across Council facilities. You will work closely with the Waste Services management team to support delivery of the Council's strategic priorities, aims and objectives.
Responsibilities
- Manage the operational availability of waste infrastructure assets to ensure the daily provision of waste transfer and acceptance services.
- Supervise waste operatives, ensuring tasks are completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with service standards, customer care expectations and record‑keeping requirements.
- Support the management team in delivering the Council's waste strategy and operational objectives.
- Undertake effective day‑to‑day management and control of:
- Household Recycling Centres
- Waste Transfer Stations
- Operational Depots
- Ensure Environmental Management Systems are implemented and that all conditions and restrictions of environmental permits are fully complied with.
- Motivate, engage and develop staff, making effective use of their skills and knowledge to deliver services within agreed parameters.
- Maintain high standards of customer care, responding professionally to complaints and ensuring accurate and meaningful information is provided to members of the public and business customers.
- Ensure safe working practices are adhered to, including the preparation, implementation and review of risk assessments and safe systems of work.
- Provide clear instruction, guidance and direction to staff to meet tasks, deadlines and performance targets.
- Maintain accurate operational records using information technology and other recording systems.
- Work flexibly as part of the Waste Services operational management team to provide management cover across the department's hours of operation.
- Maintain and enhance professional competence through continuous training and development.
Qualifications
- Experience working in a customer-facing service and achieving agreed personal and service outputs.
- Experience of working to the conditions and restrictions of environmental permits.
- Experience dealing with members of the public in conflict situations, both face-to-face and remotely.
- Knowledge and understanding of mobile plant and road transport operations.
- Knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work Act and safe systems of work.
- Experience in supervising teams and working on own initiative.
- Ability to work under pressure, manage changing priorities and respond to emergency situations, including outside normal working hours.
- Good customer care and communication skills.
- Basic IT skills, with the ability to enter data and share information accurately.
Desirable / Technical
- Experience operating mobile plant, such as JCBs and loading shovels.
- Holding, or working towards, a relevant qualification to meet the technical competence requirements of environmental permits.
