This is a hands-on role where you will contribute directly to maintaining and improving public spaces, ensuring they are clean, safe, and welcoming for everyone. As a Community Operative, you will deliver essential environmental, highways, and grounds maintenance services, working across a variety of locations and adapting to seasonal demands.
Responsibilities
- Carry out grass cutting, hedge trimming, strimming, and weed control
- Perform street cleaning activities including sweeping, litter picking, fly-tip removal, and emptying bins
- Assist with grave digging and maintenance of cemeteries
- Support seasonal planting, bedding, pruning, and general horticultural work
- Clean signs, bollards, and remove graffiti
- Assist with pothole repairs and minor highways maintenance
- Participate in winter maintenance operations such as snow clearing, gritting, and de-icing
- Safely operate hand tools, light plant, and specialist equipment
- Drive vehicles (including light and specialist vehicles such as tractors and ride-on mowers where qualified)
- Carry out pre-use vehicle and equipment checks and maintain accurate records
- Transport tools and equipment between sites
- Erect appropriate signage and barriers to ensure public safety
- Complete all required documentation including timesheets, inspection logs, and task records
- Report issues and contribute to the continuous improvement of the local area
- Work collaboratively within a team to ensure daily work targets are achieved
Additional responsibilities
- Drive Category C (LGV) vehicles and support winter maintenance shifts
- Take on supervisory responsibilities, including allocating and checking team work

Qualifications
- Have experience in grounds maintenance, construction, horticulture, or street cleansing
- Be physically fit and capable of manual work, including lifting and walking long distances
- Can safely operate tools, machinery, and vehicles
- Have a good understanding of health and safety practices
- Possess strong teamwork and communication skills
- Be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Demonstrate a positive attitude and commitment to customer service
- Hold a full UK driving licence (Category B) – additional qualifications such as LGV (Category C), horticultural certifications, or plant operation licences are advantageous
