Housing Advice Initial Assessment Officer in Scunthorpe

Housing Advice Initial Assessment Officer in Scunthorpe

Scunthorpe Full-Time No working from home possible
North Lincolnshire Council

We have an exciting opportunity within our Housing Advice Team for a motivated and organised Housing Advice Initial Assessment Officer.

This is a key front-line role, providing the first point of contact for people who are homeless, threatened with homelessness or seeking advice about their housing situation. You will listen carefully, quickly assess each person’s circumstances and ensure they receive timely, accurate and appropriate advice and support.

You will undertake rapid initial assessments, make relevant enquiries and gather information to help establish whether someone is eligible for assistance, homeless or threatened with homelessness within 56 days, has a local connection and may be in priority need. You will also provide advice about available housing options, identify opportunities to prevent or relieve homelessness and refer cases to Housing Advice Officers or other services where further support is required.

Working closely with colleagues across Housing, Rehabilitation and Recovery, as well as partner organisations, you will help ensure that people’s wider housing and support needs are understood and that they receive a coordinated and person-centred response.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has knowledge of relevant housing and homelessness legislation.
  • Can communicate sensitively and confidently with people who may be experiencing difficult or distressing circumstances.
  • Has experience of working with vulnerable adults.
  • Can undertake assessments, gather information and maintain accurate case records.
  • Is organised, able to prioritise a busy workload and work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Is confident using IT systems and willing to learn service-specific systems.
  • Understands the importance of confidentiality, professional boundaries and safeguarding.

Experience of providing housing advice or delivering a housing-related casework service would be an advantage.

This is a varied and rewarding opportunity to join a supportive team and make a genuine difference by helping people access the right advice at the earliest opportunity and preventing homelessness wherever possible.

The role is predominantly office-based, although hybrid working is supported in accordance with service requirements.

Interviews will take place on the 25th August 2026

Candidates must be able to evidence their right to work in the UK. Please note the council does not hold a sponsor licence to sponsor people to work in the UK.
