Although based at Motherwell Civic Centre, a significant aspect of this role involves delivering a peripatetic service across North Lanarkshire Council sites. The post holder will be responsible for operating with a high degree of autonomy, initiative, and accountability in the planning, coordination, and delivery of a council-wide LAN refresh programme focused on the deployment and replacement of Cisco switching infrastructure. The role supports the Council in meeting the needs of internal services by delivering modern, resilient, and secure network solutions that maximise the effective use of technology.

The post sits within the Telecoms Team, part of the Infrastructure Section, and is heavily aligned to Cisco enterprise networking technologies. Applicants should hold an SVQ Level 3, HND, or equivalent qualification in an ICT-related discipline. Industry-recognised certifications such as Cisco CCNA (or equivalent experience) are highly desirable.

The primary responsibility of the role is to support the end-to-end delivery of the LAN refresh project across all council facilities, including schools, offices, and operational buildings. This includes the installation, configuration, testing, and commissioning of Cisco switching equipment, ensuring alignment with council standards for performance, resilience, and cyber security. The post holder will also contribute to the ongoing support and optimisation of the Council’s network infrastructure.

Working closely with wider infrastructure teams (including server, security, wireless, and end-user services), the role will contribute to project delivery and business-as-usual operations. This includes managing workload effectively to meet defined service level agreements (SLAs), adhering to change and incident management processes, and communicating progress and service impacts in line with established procedures.

Candidates must demonstrate experience in structured data cabling design, standards, and implementation to support network deployments. Proven experience in an ICT infrastructure support or deployment role is essential, along with the ability to gather, interpret, and translate technical and business requirements into practical network solutions. A strong technical understanding of enterprise networking is required, particularly in:

  • Cisco switching and routing technologies (e.g., Catalyst platforms)
  • LAN design and implementation
  • Cisco wireless and voice integration
  • Network segmentation, resilience, and performance optimisation

Excellent communication skills—both written and verbal—are essential, particularly when engaging with site contacts, stakeholders, and technical teams across the Council. Knowledge of cyber security principles, including secure network design, access control, and compliance with relevant standards, is desirable. Experience of working within structured project environments (e.g., PRINCE2 or similar methodologies) and contributing to large-scale infrastructure deployments would be advantageous.

Satisfactory PVG scheme membership (Child) required. This is a temporary position for 23 months. Work pattern: 35 hours per week - Monday to Friday - 09:00 - 17:00.
