As we deliver The Plan for North Lanarkshire and drive transformational change, it is vital that we have highly skilled legal support to ensure that all corporate, commercial, and property matters are handled to the highest standards of performance, ethics, and Best Value.

We have a vacancy for a Legal Manager (Commercial and Property) to assist the Chief Officer (Legal & Democratic) in leading the council’s legal provision in these areas. You will ensure that all corporate transactions, investments, and developments are legally robust, commercially sound, and risk-managed, while also supporting the Chief Officer in areas linked to the capital programme and strategic corporate projects. This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated, ambitious legal professional who thrives on achievement and complex, high-profile work. Your role will bring you into contact with a wide range of senior officers internally and with other local authorities, COSLA, and the Scottish Government.

Essential Requirements
  • A Law Degree, Diploma in Legal Practice, and a current unrestricted Practising Certificate from the Law Society of Scotland.
  • Post-qualification experience at a senior/strategic level within a legal team, including experience of managing staff.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: Contracts and Procurement, Commercial Projects and Partnerships, Property Law and Conveyancing, Construction and Development.
  • Proven ability to provide clear, authoritative legal advice to senior officers and elected members on complex commercial, contractual, and property matters.
  • Awareness of current legal, transformational, and political issues affecting local government in Scotland.
Desirable
  • Experience in supporting large-scale capital or development projects.
  • Familiarity with multi-agency or partnership arrangements in the public sector.

You will be joining a dynamic and flexible team currently operating a hybrid model of home-working and office-based work at the Civic Centre in Motherwell. A satisfactory Level 2 check through Disclosure Scotland must be attained prior to commencing in this role. This post is politically restricted in compliance with the Local Government and Housing Act 1989.

Please note, as part of your duties and responsibilities, you will be required to participate in the Council Incident Officer standby rota, which will require you to be on standby out of office hours, for a period of one week, approximately four times a year. For this, you will receive payment in line with the Council’s Conditions of Service and full training will be provided. This will be discussed further at interview.
