North Lanarkshire Council is seeking an experienced, motivated and dynamic Senior Trading Standards Officer to join our Protective Services team. This is an exciting leadership opportunity for a qualified Trading Standards professional to lead operational activity in some of the most challenging and rewarding areas of consumer protection.

Based within the Trading Standards service, you will lead a team of officers delivering enforcement and investigative work focused on tackling rogue traders, doorstep crime, scams, counterfeit goods and illicit trade, helping to protect some of the most vulnerable members of our communities. Working closely with the Assistant Manager (Trading Standards), you will oversee a wide range of fair trading and product safety functions, ensuring services are delivered effectively and in line with legislative requirements and Council objectives.

A key element of this role is the line management of the Scottish Illicit Tobacco Team (SITT), a Scotland-wide specialist enforcement team working in partnership with HMRC and the Society of Chief Officers of Trading Standards in Scotland. This provides a unique opportunity to influence national enforcement activity while supporting local consumer protection priorities.

The successful candidate will lead and support staff, manage complex investigations, develop enforcement strategies, monitor service performance and contribute to the continuous improvement of Trading Standards services across North Lanarkshire.

About You: You will be an experienced and motivated Trading Standards professional with a strong track record of delivering high-quality regulatory and enforcement services. A confident leader, you will be able to inspire and develop a team, manage competing priorities and make sound, evidence-based decisions in a fast-paced environment. With excellent investigative, analytical and communication skills, you will be comfortable handling complex cases, building effective relationships with partners and representing the Council professionally with businesses, consumers and other stakeholders. Customer-focused and committed to continuous improvement, you will be passionate about protecting consumers, promoting fair trading and ensuring statutory responsibilities are delivered to the highest standards.

A full driving licence is essential. You will require to become a Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme member through Disclosure Scotland and obtain a satisfactory membership check prior to commencing in this role.

Work pattern: 35 hours per week - Monday - Thursday: 08:45 - 16:45 (including a 55 minute unpaid break) Friday: 08:45 - 16:15 (including a 50 minute unpaid break)
