We’re seeking Training Managers and Trainers to help our utility clients deliver the digital, technology and organisation change across the AMP cycle.
Please note, this is an initial 3-6 month contract that will require up to 3 days working on client site in the South of England and may involve extensive travel to other sites.
You’ll join North Highland’s Energy & Utilities (E&U) practice, working with our UK water utility clients across the South of England building capability across their multi-year transformation and change portfolios, delivered under managed service and consulting frameworks. The sector is delivering the biggest upgrades seen in a century — modernising assets, systems and ways of working to ensure essential water and waste services are provided.
Responsibilities:
- Analyse training needs by role (HQ, field, control room, planners, customer ops) factoring in risk, safety exposure and regulatory obligations; distinguish mandatory vs discretionary training and identify skill gaps introduced by new systems or processes.
- Design training for operational contexts using blended approaches — on-the-job training, tool-based learning, simulations and scenarios, and short, task-focused modules.
- Plan delivery and scheduling around shift patterns, peak operational periods, and standby/emergency cover so learning fits around keeping the service running.
- Shape accreditation, competency and compliance requirements, including “License to Operate”-style competency development for repair & maintenance and field workforces.
- Deliver instructor-led and virtual training tailored for different audiences and confidence levels; simplify complex workflows into clear, accessible guidance for non-technical users.
- Provide training support and reinforcement — super users/champions, floor-walking, on-the-job coaching, refresher training and performance support tools — and support “Train-the-Trainer” approaches to build internal capability.
- Collect feedback, evaluate effectiveness, iterate content and delivery, and manage and maintain training records.
- Use AI tools to rapidly develop, update and iterate training content and materials.
Preferred Experience:
- Experience delivering training for digital/system implementations and/or operational process change, ideally in utilities/water or similarly regulated environments; comparable sectors and field-based services also welcome.
- Strong content creation capability (job aids, guides, structured learning paths) and confidence facilitating groups across control rooms, delivery hubs and contact centres.
- System experience across EAM platforms (SAP PM, Maximo), mobile workforce tools, GIS and operational data systems, contact centre, CRM, billing and SCADA.
- Comfortable adapting to different learning styles and operational constraints; able to coordinate delivery around demanding 24/7 operational schedules.
Requirements for Training Managers:
- Minimum five years in a training or L&D role and a degree in Human Resources, Instructional Design or a related field, with a track record of measurable performance improvement.
- Proficiency with learning management systems and training technologies.
- Ability to develop clear learning solutions and analytics to interpret and demonstrate training impact.
Eligibility:
Applicants must be authorized to work in the United Kingdom, without the need for visa sponsorship by North Highland. Work visa sponsorship will not be provided, either now or in the future, for this position. This is a temporary employee (PAYE) opportunity working via an Umbrella company.
