Join us as a Planning Policy Officer. The North East Combined Authority is moving at pace to deliver its new statutory duty to prepare a Spatial Development Strategy (SDS), marking a pivotal moment for strategic planning in the region. This role presents an exceptional opportunity for an experienced Planning Policy Officer to play a key role in shaping the future of the North East—supporting sustainable development, driving economic growth, and contributing to a long‑term vision that enables all communities to thrive.

Working collaboratively with colleagues across the North East CA and the seven Local Planning Authorities, the postholder will help develop high‑quality strategic plans that integrate with major regional priorities. As part of the newly established Spatial Planning Team, you will contribute to policy development across the full breadth of the SDS, with a particular focus on regeneration and the built environment, rural and coastal issues, and the natural environment.

Your work will support healthy and safe communities, unlock investment in key growth areas, and ensure the region’s development aligns with principles of sustainability and resilience. This is a dynamic and influential role that will involve producing key policy documents, coordinating essential evidence‑gathering, and providing specialist planning advice to support strategic investment and regeneration programmes.

You will help shape responses to emerging legislation, build strong partnerships across sectors, and support the Mayor’s statutory planning powers by reviewing significant planning applications and contributing to major development strategies.

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and particularly encourage candidates who are underrepresented in senior roles, including women, disabled people, LGBTQ+ people and those from Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities. If you’re passionate about strategic planning and keen to help deliver a transformative agenda for the North East, we’d be delighted to hear from you.

To apply For an informal discussion or further information please contact George Mansbridge, Planning Consultant Lead/Head of Planning, george.mansbridge1@northeast-ca.gov.uk. Closing date for applications is Thursday 26th February 2026 at 23:59. For further information about the North East Combined Authority please see the authority’s website www.northeast-ca.gov.uk.
