Overview
In line with the government’s priority to increase access and availability of mental health and wellbeing support for children and young people, there are new recruit-to-train positions within the children’s mental health services: Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) roles. These posts are held within Kent and Medway Mental Health Support Teams (MHST).
EMHPs within these teams provide low intensity interventions based on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and guided self-help. Trainee EMHPs are taught these interventions while also learning more about the MHST programme and children and young people’s mental health.
EMHP training roles will be based within Ashford, South East Kent, Medway and surrounding localities. All applicants need to be ready to start on 5 January 2026.
Training and Application Requirements
Candidates applying must also apply to the King’s College London University EMHP training programme and be approved for the course. This must be completed before an official job offer can be made. It is advised to complete this alongside the NELFT recruitment process.

Program and Work Arrangements
Throughout the training year, under clinical supervision, you will develop knowledge and practice skills to employ a range of evidence-based interventions for mental health difficulties. Delivery includes direct individual and group support for children, young people and their families, in line with NHS and University expectations. The NHS team uses a blend of face-to-face interventions and online/digital support (e.g., video and telephone).
As an NHS employee you will record outcomes and contribute to the national dataset on what works to support children and young people’s emotional wellbeing and mental health.
During the training year, the role includes both academic and practical elements, with face-to-face work across Kent and Medway (including schools and other settings accessed by young people).
Candidates will need to travel between school sites/clinical sites and to KCL to undertake the university course and practical elements (business travel will be reimbursed).
Post-Training
On successful completion of training, Trainee EMHPs will be equipped to work as qualified EMHPs as autonomous and responsible practitioners within their scope of practice, alongside their clinical team (MHSTs).
Induction and Probation
Starting with NELFT: New starters join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and undergo an induction of up to two weeks, including mandatory training, systems training and equipment allocation. Induction is at the Trust head office in Rainham, Essex. This post is subject to a probationary period. Internal applicants are exempt from probationary requirements unless currently mid-probation or a bank staff member.
Sponsorship and Funding
This role is not eligible for sponsorship. You must have the right to work in the UK at the time of application. Successful candidates will undertake a post-graduate educational programme for the EMHP role delivered by King’s College London, funded through NHS Agenda for Change (AfC) at Band 4 (with progression to Band 5 on completion). New staff will be supported with an automatic entry to the Surrey/KCL programme and will have a guaranteed employment on successful completion of training.
Registration
EMHPs are required to become registered practitioners on qualification with either the British Psychological Society (BPS) or the British Association for Behaviour and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP). These registrations require membership and fees. Please discuss this during the training year.
Funding and Programme Details
The trainee EMHPs are funded by NHS England (formerly HEE). Details about funding can be explained at interview. Candidates are not expected to pay university fees; these are recruit-to-train posts. The 12-month university programme begins January 2026 and includes taught days, placement hours in education, wellbeing and mainstream mental health services, and self-guided study days. You will work with a variety of age groups and families across Kent and Medway.
Responsibilities (During Training)
- Deliver evidence-based intervention for children and young people in educational settings with mild to moderate mental health problems
- Help children and young people with more severe problems to rapidly access more specialist services
- Support and facilitate staff in education settings to identify and manage mental health and wellbeing issues where appropriate
- Work with and within education environments to improve access to specialist mental health services
Team and Support
You will join an existing and growing EMHP team in NELFT across Kent and Medway. Staff will offer training year support as “buddies”.
