What\’s the role about?

This graduate‑level position offers hands‑on experience in housing enforcement while you study for a Diploma in Private Sector Housing Interventions. As part of the Environmental Health & Housing Team, you will investigate complaints about poor housing conditions in private homes, HMOs (Houses in Multiple Occupation), and mobile homes. You’ll conduct inspections using the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) to identify and assess hazards, support enforcement actions by preparing reports, issuing notices, and monitoring compliance, and assist with the licensing of rental properties to ensure landlords meet legal standards. Additionally, you’ll help bring empty homes back into use, address properties that pose public health risks, and engage with the community to gather evidence and provide housing‑related advice. This role is ideal for someone looking to build a career in housing, environmental health, or local government, with a strong focus on learning, development, and making a meaningful impact in the community.

What will your day look like?

In this role, you’ll be actively involved in investigating complaints about poor housing conditions across private sector homes, HMOs, and mobile homes. You’ll conduct inspections using the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS), and under supervision, prepare detailed reports, schedules of work, and enforcement notices. You’ll also support the licensing of rental properties, ensuring they meet required housing standards, and contribute to bringing empty homes back into use while addressing public health concerns. Collaboration is key—you’ll work closely with colleagues, gather evidence, and engage with the community to help improve living conditions across the borough.

Who are we looking for?

We’re looking for a graduate with at least 96 UCAS points and a relevant degree—such as Housing, Environmental Health, or Property Surveying—who brings strong communication skills and holds a full driving licence. The ideal candidate will be a team player who can also work independently, manage their time effectively, and adapt to new challenges with confidence. Being tech‑savvy, flexible, and willing to work outside core hours when needed are also key qualities we value in this role.
You must have graduated in the past two years.
