Our Building Control team is committed to delivering an excellent, customer-focused service that helps make Gateshead a safe and thriving place to live, work and invest. Working within a supportive and experienced team, you'll gain exposure to a wide variety of projects across the borough while receiving professional support from Registered Building Inspectors validated up to Class 3 and 4. We are passionate about developing talent and will actively support your progression through the Building Safety Regulator competency framework, providing the experience, mentoring and continuous professional development needed to build a successful career in Building Control.

From plans to completion, help create safe, sustainable communities.

What you will get to do:

  • Manage a caseload of Building Control applications and ensure compliance with the Building Act 1984, Building Regulations, Building Safety Act 2022 and associated legislation.
  • Analyse and evaluate plans submitted as part of Building Control applications, issuing decisions and notices within statutory timescales.
  • Carry out site inspections and provide advice to ensure compliance with Building Regulations and associated legislation.
  • Work within the Building Safety Regulator Competency Framework and Code of Conduct, maintaining and developing your professional competence.
  • Support the council's 24-hour dangerous structures service and assist with emergency situations when required.
  • Respond to customer enquiries and complaints, ensuring a professional, efficient and coordinated service.
  • Liaise with developers, contractors, members of the public, statutory consultees and other council services on Building Control matters.
  • Assist with enforcement activity and investigations relating to building regulation contraventions.
  • Undertake Dangerous Structures assessments appropriate to your level of experience.
  • Monitor building work in progress across allocated projects and geographical areas.
  • Contribute to the ongoing improvement of service procedures, systems and quality standards.
  • Implement and work within the LABC Quality Management System (or equivalent).
  • Use modern technology and IT systems to effectively manage and deliver Building Control services.
  • Work collaboratively with Development Mnagement, council services and external partners to deliver an integrated service.

What you will bring:

  • Minimum validation as a Class 1 Registered Building Inspector within the Building Safety Regulator Competency Framework (or equivalent).
  • Experience of Building Control legislation, processes and procedures.
  • Competence in carrying out plan examinations and site inspections.
  • Strong customer focus and a commitment to delivering high-quality services and continuous improvement.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively with customers, contractors, partners and colleagues.
  • Strong IT skills and confidence using relevant digital systems and technology.
  • A full driving licence or access to suitable mobility support to undertake the requirements of the role.
