We have an exciting opportunity to join our Public Protection service as a Technical Officer. This post is based at the Metrology Centre, Cannon Park, Middlesbrough, part of Tees Valley Joint Services. The service delivers regulatory and specialist support on behalf of the Tees Valley local authorities.

We are a small team which supports local businesses by helping them meet rules on weighing and measuring for trade and provides a mass calibration service that checks weights are accurate and meet the legal standards. This is a hands‑on role working with a range of weighing and measuring equipment from small weights through to large, heavy items. You will be involved in cleaning and repairing weights before they are checked for accuracy. This work involves manual handling. To move heavier items, you will need to use lifting equipment such as a crane or a forklift truck.

You will help with the day‑to‑day running of the Metrology Centre, including basic equipment maintenance. The role involves recording on our laboratory IT system and dealing with simple enquiries from customers and partner organisations. We will provide full training on using the equipment and IT systems.

This is a physical role and requires someone who is organised and who will always work carefully and accurately. This work requires concentration and the ability to solve practical problems. We are particularly interested if you have experience in a mechanical, testing or similar technical environment; however, we would welcome applications from those who meet the criteria.

If this is you, this may be the opportunity you are looking for! Please note, this is a part‑time vacancy, working 22.5 hours per week.

If you would like to talk through this opportunity further, please contact Jim Tann on jim_tann@middlesbrough.gov.uk.

We operate a Guaranteed Interview Scheme for applicants that can show they meet all the essential criteria and have indicated they have a disability, are a looked‑after young person, care leaver or a veteran.
