About the role

We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for an experienced, highly skilled and motivated Teacher of Deaf Children to join our Children’s Sensory Inclusion Team (CSIT). This unique hybrid role provides the opportunity to work across two settings: supporting D/deaf pupils at Sandhill View Academy, while also contributing to our wider peripatetic service. It offers the best of both worlds - combining a consistent school‑based presence with the variety and reach of outreach work. You will be onsite at Sandhill View Academy during working school hours for part of the week and working peripatetically across Sunderland schools for the remainder.

Accreditation in BSL Level 2 minimum is highly desirable. The successful candidate will contribute to the wider work of the CSIT and Specialist SEND Support Service within Together for Children – and will safeguard and promote the welfare of children. This is a fantastic opportunity to become part of a proactive and child‑focused team, with a commitment to securing the personal and academic welfare of D/deaf children in school.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore will be subject to an Enhanced DBS check from the Disclosure and Barring Service. We will also carry out an online internet search for information that is publicly available online that might suggest that you are not fit to work with children or young people. Due to recent changes in UKVI rules, this role does not meet the criteria for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship under the updated eligibility requirements effective 22 July 2025.

We want you to apply if you have the following qualifications, knowledge and experience:

  • Maths and English at GCSE Grade 4 / C (or equivalent)
  • Qualified Teacher Status (Early Years, primary or secondary)
  • Qualified Teacher of Deaf Children (or currently working towards Mandatory training)
  • British Sign Language at Level 2 as a minimum (Level 3 desirable) (or a commitment to work towards)
  • Relevant and recent experience of working with Deaf children / children with hearing loss and a good understanding of the impact that this can have on access to learning and education
  • Working within the Specialist Deaf curriculum framework and NatSIP guidelines
  • Working with children who have a range of complex SEND needs in addition to a Primary Need of deafness / Hearing loss
  • Working with children who have multi‑sensory impairment (desirable)
  • Relevant experience of working with children and young people with special educational needs in an educational context to reduce barriers to inclusion, facilitate learning and encourage independence
  • Teaching and Supporting children who communicate through BSL and / or sign supported English
  • Knowledge of current legislation regarding SEND Statutory processes including SEND Code of Practice
  • Ability to moderate language using (sign), speech and the written form to meet a range of different communication styles and needs
  • Knowledge of the Early Years / National Curriculum
