We are seeking a highly motivated and driven candidate who can support our broad Contracts and Commercial Team function, bringing experience of managing and improving operating procedures, management/interpretation of waste data and commercial experience of working with high value contracts. The successful candidate will act as a line manager, coordinating the activities of 3 highly motivated team members delivering on a broad variety of work duties. These duties range from monitoring landfill gas levels in the field, day to day management of a small waste transfer station in Blyth, engaging with our communities at events and shows, operational contract site inspections of HWRCs and WTS and management/interpretation of all data for a multimillion‑pound Integrated Waste PFI Contract.

The role will focus not only on supporting these business‑as‑usual activities but also casting a strategic eye over them to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of them and where possible detailing a medium to long term strategy as required. Further to this, the successful candidates will:

  • Oversee the preparation of our internal data systems for EPR and DWT
  • Ensure a joined‑up approach to communications and social media keeping all stakeholders informed
  • Work with the wider Neighbourhood Services Team and PFI operational contractors Suez to reduce contamination found in recycling. Current levels of contamination are thought to cost the Council more than £1m per annum.
  • Support the Contracts and Commercial Manager with contractual negotiations and data provision requirements to enable the introduction of new kerbside food waste services to southeast Northumberland and countywide dry recycling services which will include the construction of a new MRF in West Sleekburn.

The team operates on a hybrid basis, meeting weekly at County Hall on Wednesdays. There is also a desk available at the Cowley Road Depot, 5 days per week if required, and regular off‑site meetings and field activities meaning a good variety of interaction with colleagues.

REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB:

  • Level 6 qualification or equivalent standard of education preferably in Waste Management or Environmental Studies, or significant relevant professional experience.
  • Holder of the CIWM/WAMITAB Operator Competence Scheme qualification.
  • Holder of a valid UK driving license.
  • Thorough knowledge of waste legislation, regulation and best practice, including EPR, DRS and Simpler Recycling.
