Overview
Band 6 Haemodialysis Nurse – West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven (25 hours per week). Primary posting in the Haemodialysis Unit with ability to cover the Cumberland Infirmary dialysis unit, Carlisle. On‑call availability required.
Location and Coverage
West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven. Provide cover for Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle.
Responsibilities
- Assess, plan, deliver and evaluate nursing care for patients requiring haemodialysis.
- Take charge of the dialysis unit on a regular basis as required.
- Contribute to the smooth running of the unit through agreed additional responsibilities with the ward manager.
- Demonstrate excellent leadership skills to ensure high‑quality patient care in the absence of the unit sister/charge nurse.
- Act as link nurse to maintain high standards of patient care.
Clinical Duties
- Perform haemodialysis therapy using cannulation of AVF and grafts, and access via CVCs for ESRF patients on the unit and for acute inpatients when needed.
- Carry out patient assessments related to haemodialysis care and initiate appropriate clinical interventions, including adjustment of target weight based on fluid assessment.
- Monitor and act upon changes in blood results and liaise with medical staff.
- Perform a range of physiological measurements and interpret data, adjusting dialysis therapy to ensure adequacy of results in line with national standards.
- Commence intravenous therapy and blood transfusions as prescribed.
- Recognise signs and symptoms of acute hypovolaemia/hypotension and manage treatment of deteriorating patients.
- Give specialist advice to patients, relatives and other health care professionals.
- Troubleshoot technical problems relating to dialysis machines as they arise.
Management & Leadership
- Contribute to the smooth running of the unit by providing leadership and supervision of staff as required.
- Provide training and guidance to less experienced members of the team, based upon current evidence‑based practice.
- Contribute to the review of staff performance.
- Act as shift co‑ordinator in rotation with other nurses in the team.
- Participate in the provision of an on‑call haemodialysis service.

Standard DBS check is £21.50; Enhanced DBS check £49.50 plus any admin costs. The Trust is committed to safeguarding adults and children. Successful candidates will be subject to a DBS check with costs met by salary deduction as per the Standard Check (£21.85) and Enhanced Check (£41.90).
Qualifications & Requirements
Applicants must hold an appropriate nursing qualification and be registered with the NMC. Experience in haemodialysis nursing is essential.
