Specialty Doctor in Anaesthetics

North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Trust is seeking to appoint a Specialty Doctor in Anaesthetics based at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle (full‑time or part‑time). Cross‑site work to the West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven is anticipated.

Responsibilities

  • Provide elective anaesthesia sessions and contribute to a resident full‑shift rota not expected to exceed 1in 8.
  • Work across a range of anaesthetic areas and develop special interests, encouraging experience at both hospital sites.
  • Supervise junior doctors in training: induction, formal appraisals, learning portfolios, career advice.
  • Undertake mandatory training and participate in clinical meetings and postgraduate activities.
  • Work closely with other specialist teams and collaborate with managers to ensure efficient running of services.
  • Assist in preparation of business plans and take an interest in research/teaching with participation in projects and courses.
  • Demonstrate firm commitment to Clinical Governance: clinical audit, risk management, incident reporting, continuing medical education in line with Royal College recommendations.

Qualifications – Essential

  • MBBS or recognised equivalent.
  • Full GMC/GDC registration.
  • Completed at least four years’ full‑time postgraduate training (equivalent part‑time) with at least two years in a specialty training programme relevant to anaesthetics.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, resilience, thoroughness, initiative, probity, decisiveness/ accountability, flexibility, team‑player skills.
  • Evidence of participation in local audit and engagement with clinical governance.

Qualifications – Desirable

  • Relevant postgraduate qualification.
  • Teaching of junior medical staff and nursing staff.
  • Training in evidence‑based medicine, CPD, appraisal and revalidation within GMC guidelines.
  • Academic training with research publication.
  • Experience in clinical governance and management/administrative experience.
  • Pre‑employment health screening and willingness to meet travel requirements.
