Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Immunology & Allergy Team at Southmead Hospital. The team provides a regional service to patients across the northern part of the Southwest. Due to expansion of the service, we are looking for a highly motivated, experienced immunology and allergy specialist nurse who is passionate about high quality patient care to join the team of Immunology & Allergy Nurses.

We are looking for a nurse who is flexible, proactive and committed with excellent communication skills, to work within the team providing care to patients with immunological and allergic disease. The post is based primarily at Southmead Hospital but will involve some off-site clinical working. The postholder will work as an autonomous practitioner who will devise, implement and follow up specialist treatments across the disease spectrum.

They will lead on the day to day running of the nursing service and management of the nursing team. They will act as a line manager to the specialist nursing team. They will deliver educational programmes to a range of healthcare professionals in relation to immunology and allergy, including medical, nursing and allied health professional staff.

Allergy Service

To work with the Enhanced Practice Service Lead in delivering all nursing aspects of the allergy service, including but not limited to drug allergy testing, anaesthetic allergy testing, drug and food challenges, allergen immunotherapy, skin prick testing, home therapy training for biologics.

To lead on development of policies and protocols related to allergy nursing practice.

To work with the Team to maintain IQAS accreditation.

Managerial

To perform day to day line management of the nursing team to include 1 to 1s, performance monitoring, appraisals and education.

To maintain the nursing team e-roster.

To participate in triumvirate meetings and liaise with the Specialty Management as required.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

Clinical: To work as an autonomous expert practitioner and provide up to date evidence-based care. To be an expert resource, providing clinical advice to the multidisciplinary team, patients, carers and other health professionals. To use highly specialist nursing skills to undertake expert assessments and deliver highly specialised care. To maintain legible, contemporaneous records and to contribute to policies, protocols and clinical pathways to improve care. To autonomously manage an individual caseload with a minimum of two clinics per week. To educate and advise patients to participate in informed decision making and consent.

Education/Training/Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Registered Nurse with current NMC Registration (Adult)
  • Degree or Diploma in Nursing Studies

Desirable criteria

  • PACR, PADRAP, Independent Prescribing

Work Experience

Essential criteria

  • Three year post registration experience, at least two of which are within the specialty.
  • Have achieved or be working towards an MSc in the specialty
  • Experience of autonomously managing own caseload in specialty

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Essential criteria

  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills
  • Demonstrates specialist expertise, underpinned by theory via CPD and work-based training
  • Ability to work flexibly to meet service needs
  • Assertiveness, tact and diplomacy
  • Competence in all areas of the speciality

Personal Qualities

Essential criteria

  • Excellent time management skills
  • Must be able to travel independently to other hospital sites
