Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to apply for a fixed term, secondment as the Highly Specialist Pharmacist for Technical Services and Haematology at NBT. We are looking for an enthusiastic, self‑motivated, and forward‑thinking individual to join our team. The department provides a friendly, stimulating and rewarding environment for staff to develop their clinical and technical expertise. Pharmacists are valued members of the multidisciplinary team, playing a key role in delivering a high‑quality service for our patients. This is a 12‑month fixed term post.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be responsible for the day‑to‑day provision of clinical pharmacy services to the haematology directorate including outpatients, inpatients, and the chemotherapy day unit. The post holder will work closely with the haematology multidisciplinary team contributing towards teaching, guideline development, and clinical audits. There is also an opportunity for the post holder to undertake non‑medical prescribing clinics.

The post holder will support the Principal Pharmacist in the leadership of the Technical Services team to ensure safe and efficient service delivery. This provides the opportunity to work with the senior team, contributing to service developments and implementing improved ways of working. The post holder will also support regional/national workstreams including ‘Assurance of Aseptic Preparation of Medicines’ Audit and Aseptic Services Transformation.

The successful candidate will have previous experience working within Technical Services and haematology or oncology. You must have completed the clinical diploma and be committed to continuing professional development. Being a qualified non‑medical prescriber would be an advantage but is not essential.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • To be a pharmacy clinical specialist in haematology. To provide support to the pharmacy Technical Services unit and assist with leadership of the team, including deputising for the Accountable Pharmacist.
  • To support the clinical pharmacy team and multi‑disciplinary team in the management and development of specialist clinical services related to haematology in accordance with local and national directives, guidelines and medicines legislation.
  • To work closely with clinical specialists and pharmacy staff for the provision of an efficient, co‑ordinated and robust pharmaceutical service for haematology. To meet expectations and demands, reduce risks and improve patient safety.
  • To assist with the build and maintenance of the electronic chemotherapy prescribing system (ChemoCareÂŽ).
  • To act as an “Authorised Pharmacist”, as delegated by the “Accountable Pharmacist” in accordance with Section 10 exemption of the Medicines Act 1968.
  • To deputise for the “Accountable Pharmacist” to ensure robust cover arrangements are in place and consistent service provision is maintained.
  • To provide support to ensure that the Technical Services facilities are compliant with all aspects of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), and all other relevant quality standards.
  • To participate in the provision of training, mentoring, supervision, and management of staff within Technical Services and the associated clinical specialities, in accordance with established policies, procedures and all individual requirements.
  • To be part of the clinical pharmacy service, to inpatient wards and dispensary. To participate in late night, weekend and bank holiday rotas.

  • UK registered Pharmacist
  • Clinical diploma or other recognised postgraduate qualification
  • Evidence of CPD and revalidation

Desirable Criteria

  • Qualified Independent Prescriber

Work Experience

Essential Criteria

  • UK hospital pharmacy experience
  • Relevant clinical pharmacy experience (haematology or oncology)
  • Experience of working within Technical Services
  • Experience of audit and quality systems to improve service delivery
  • Experience of teaching or supporting learning (mentoring, marking etc)

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of management or leadership

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Essential Criteria

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to manage time and prioritise effectively
  • Clinical knowledge in specialist area related to the post (haematology or oncology)
  • Basic knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
  • Relevant IT skills to ECDL level or equivalent
  • Working knowledge of GMP & other relevant standards
  • Proactive approach to application of specialist pharmaceutical knowledge to enhance patient care
