Job summary

The Grey Walter Department of Clinical Neurophysiology is based within the Brunel Building of Southmead Hospital. The department is looking for an experienced highly specialised neurophysiologist to join our busy service.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience across a wide range of specialist techniques and procedures with significant Master level post-graduate experience. These specialist techniques should include advanced evoked potential recordings and interpretation in the intraoperative theatre environment; including monitoring for orthopaedic spinal surgery and spinal, brainstem and supratentorial neurosurgical cases as well as brachial plexus surgeries.

Candidates must be registerable with the AHCS/RCCP and have ANS professional body (Part I and II) qualifications.

This is a part time position of 0.7 wte per week. This new vacancy, to meet the needs of an expanding service to meet the requirements of skull based surgery and brachial plexus surgery, will involve frequent extended working hours to meet the needs of the intraoperative monitoring service.

An out-of-hours weekend on-call service for EEG is also provided.

The main duties would include

Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring for: –

Orthopaedic spinal deformity surgery (paediatric and adult)

Neurosurgical procedures of the spine (intradural -, extradural -, intramedullary – lesions, tethered cord release, selective dorsal rhizotomies)

Supratentorial lesions (motor and sensory cortical and sub-cortical mapping)

Brainstem lesions (cranial nerve monitoring and mapping, corticobulbar MEPs, microvascular decompressions, AVMs, visual evoked potentials).

Brachial plexus surgery (SEP mapping and monitoring for elective and post-trauma cases).

Neurophysiology testing/recordings including: –

Routine out-patient recordings (EEG, sleep deprived EEGs and ambulatory monitoring).

In-patient recordings (portable EEGs on the ward/ITU/NICU) and long term ITU monitoring.

Polysomnography (PSG and MSLT/MWT)

Evoked potential recordings (VEPs/BAEPs/SEPs/MEPs).

Nerve conduction studies (Carpal tunnel syndrome screening, ulnar neuropathy at the elbow, peripheral neuropathy screening).
