Job Overview

Genetic Technologist – Band 5

Bristol Genetics Laboratory, South West Genomics Laboratory Hub (SWGLH), Southmead Hospital, Bristol

Employment Details

  • Full‑time (30–37½ hours per week) or part‑time
  • Shift pattern – Monday–Friday or Tuesday–Saturday, 07:00–20:00 (rotating rota including weekends and bank holidays)
  • Location – Southmead Hospital, Bristol

Main Duties

  • Work as part of a technical team, undertaking scientific and technical duties covering a wide range of analytical techniques under senior staff supervision.
  • Perform genetic analyses on patients referred for a wide range of genetic disorders as directed by a registered clinical scientist, enabling reporting time targets to be met.
  • Receive and process samples submitted to the Department in accordance with laboratory policies and protocols.
  • Analyse and interpret results on a first‑line basis, recording results on worksheets, patient files and the laboratory database.
  • Carry out technical developments, introduce new techniques into the diagnostic service and support research and development projects as required.
  • Maintain a high level of professional competence in the performance of all tests and investigations carried out in the section.
  • Assist in the supervision, training, and teaching of trainee and junior staff as directed by senior scientific staff.
  • Provide technical support for research and development projects as required.
  • Maintain day‑to‑day equipment maintenance, cleanliness, and quality assurance procedures.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in a relevant science subject or equivalent.
  • Good practical skills in laboratory genetics.
  • Experience of staff training and supervision (desirable).
  • Experience with automated laboratory equipment relevant to genetics (desirable).
  • Good organisational and communication skills.
  • Good technical knowledge of current laboratory genetics methods.
  • IT skills and experience with laboratory software systems.
  • Awareness of quality assurance relevant to genetics.
  • Ability to manage stock levels of consumables and reagents.

Registration

Registration as a Genetic Technologist or equivalent is desirable. Successful applicants will be expected to work towards registration.

Professional Development

Participation in continued professional development and training sessions is required.
