Job Overview

We are looking for experienced Emergency Nurse Practitioner\’s who are either Registered Nurses or Paramedics to join our bank!

The successful candidate will independently assess, investigate, diagnose, and treat patients in our busy Emergency Department.

Every day will be different, busy but never dull! You\’ll enjoy working with supportive co-workers, providing an efficient and caring service to our patients.

Working in our Emergency Department across 7 days of the week. Shift patterns between 10 and 12 hours, between 08.00 and 23.00.

Main duties of the job

As a Bank ENP, Your Responsibilities Will Include

  • Provide clear and effective leadership
  • Participate in assessment, planning and delivery of direct patient care across the Emergency Department, Ambulatory Unit and Minor Injuries Unit
  • Be fully accountable and responsible for shift management
  • Independently assess, investigate, diagnose and treat patients in specific client groups
  • Manage, see and treat environment safely, ensure safe and effective practice at all times from all key personnel working within that area
  • Work in collaboration with the Ward manager and Clinical Matron to ensure the delivery of high calibre of evidence based patient care, and to encourage and develop a flexible work force through the efficient use of facilities, manpower and other resources
  • Initiate, promote and maintain high standards of practice within the team in line with departmental requirements
  • Provide clinical expertise both on shift and when representing the department
  • Manage all resources effectively and within budget parameters
  • Actively participate in audits

Patient Care And Clinical Standards

  • Independently assess, investigate, diagnose and treat patients in specific client groups.
  • Ensure effective liaison between primary and secondary nursing care providers, with other professional, statutory and voluntary disciplines/groups in order to provide a seamless service for the patients and their carers.
  • Ensure maintenance of clinical competence/skills of self and others in day-to-day working practices.
  • To provide expert care, advice and support to the patients, their relatives and carers.
  • Ensure that your own and the team’s practice is evidence based and in line with National Service Frameworks and/or other given standards.
  • Assist the staff to assess, plan and evaluate care as required.
  • Contribute to the body of nursing knowledge by participation and facilitation of self and others in research and audit.
  • Report on audits, and implement recommendations as appropriate.
  • Undertake additional nursing tasks relevant to Clinical area.
  • Communicate and disseminate information (verbal, written and electronic) appropriately to: patients, relatives, and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Maintain contemporaneous patient records.

Supervisory And Management Responsibilities

  • Development of speciality specific clinical protocols and guidelines.
  • Monitor and control the use of resources and make recommendations for expenditure in order to ensure value for money and meet Unit and corporate objectives.
  • Be aware of the financial position of the department, and discuss any areas of concern with the Clinical Matron /Head of Nursing.
  • Act as designated signatory to order resources and authorise financial payments, e.g. unsocial hours payments
  • Provide day-to-day facilitation of appropriate skill mix to meet the needs of the service. Work within Trust protocols for utilisation of temporary staffing as required on a daily basis.
  • Assist in staff recruitment in line with the recruitment and selection process in line with Trust policy.
  • Identify and minimise any conflict in your immediate team and the wider team and facilitate good interpersonal communications.
  • Counsel staff formally and informally as appropriate.
  • Manage your individual team using Trust Personnel policies and procedures, including sickness and absence monitoring, appraisals, capability and disciplinary and mandatory training.
  • Undertake a lead role within the wider team as delegated to you by the Ward manager or Matron (eg Health & Safety, Education)

Professional And Clinical Leadership

  • Provide the senior nursing support in response to a Major Incident for the Minor Injuries Unit (when on shift). In the event of a major incident being declared make every reasonable effort to make yourself available to the department
  • Provide effective leadership and management when undertaking shift coordination (MIU). Ensuring all quality indicators and standards are achieved and timely and effective escalation occurs, maintaining accurate records at all times.
  • Provide professional leadership, advice, a sense of direction, support and motivation for both your immediate team, the wider team, within the speciality and external to the clinical setting.
  • Create an environment where effective working relationships and conditions are provided to obtain the highest possible standard of care through assessment, planning, evaluation and delivery.
  • Plan, allocate and evaluate own working practices and that of the department team.
  • Obtain and evaluate information to aid decision-making and store necessary information.
  • Initiate and implement, change and improvement in the practice and service provided by the team.
  • Exchange information to solve problems and make decisions through leading meetings and group discussions, advising and informing others

Education/Training/Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Registered Nurse or Paramedic with NMC/ HCPC Registration
  • Speciality specific qualification
  • Teaching and assessing qualification
  • Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable criteria

  • Completed or working towards Masters in Advanced Practice

Work Experience

Essential criteria

  • Significant post-registration experience
  • Current/recent clinical and management experience at Band 6 level
  • Recent/current experience in speciality

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of working as ENP/ ECP in an urgent care or ED setting

Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities

Essential criteria

  • Advanced communication skills, verbal & written, to include report writing and record keeping.
  • Knowledge of Clinical Governance
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with patients and multidisciplinary team
  • Basic computer / IT skills and expectation to develop these in line with the needs of the service i.e. IHS, Acis, Email use.
  • Sound understanding of the NMC/ HCPC Code of Conduct
  • Ability to maintain therapeutic relationshipTime management/ basic problem solving skillss
