Responsibilities

  • Join the Medical Photography Department at North Bristol NHS Trust as an Assistant Medical Photographer (Band 4, 1.0 WTE, 18 months fixed term).
  • Deliver high-quality medical photography (studio/ward/clinic) and ophthalmic photography to support clinical decision making and patient care.
  • Support the department with image management within the Medical Image Management System (MIMS) and Job Management System (JMS) databases; ensure appropriate consent levels are recorded and data is accurately entered.
  • Undertake medical photography under the direction of medical photographers in accordance with local practice/policies; work independently and within departmental guidelines to meet agreed timelines.
  • Provide a photographic support service for non-clinical activities undertaken by the Trust, following national and local standards.
  • Contribute to multi-skilling within the department to ensure an efficient service in line with departmental SLAs.
  • Maintain quality assurance and support accreditation from the Institute of Medical Illustrators (IMI).
  • Ensure specialist photography equipment is managed safely and securely; provide imaging for public relations, exhibitions, posters, and other Trust projects as required.
  • Participate in the department’s poster printing service and in data capture for research, quality improvement, and service evaluation.
  • Assist patients with dressing/undressing as needed to obtain appropriate photography/video views; provide studio, outpatient, clinic, and ward photography as required.
  • Contribute to the continuous professional development and training of new staff as part of departmental multi-skilling.
  • Uphold policies on patient consent, confidentiality, data protection, and human rights; follow departmental and Trust policies and procedures.
  • Work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as service developments require.

Qualifications and Skills

  • HND / NVQ level 4 or foundation degree in photography, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; strong image management and digital technology understanding.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; capable of delivering within agreed timescales.
  • Competent in fundus/OCT photography where applicable; able to undertake multi-skilling duties within the department.
  • Commitment to maintaining professional competence and ongoing development.

Additional Information

During employment, you will be involved in image handling (NEFF files), standardised file creation (e.g. JPEGs), image uploads to MIMS, quality checks in MIMS and JMS, and printing to standard templates for Trust, police, solicitors, and the Crown Prosecution Service when applicable. You will also provide medical video within departmental SOPs and support the department’s imaging and illustration requirements.
