Overview

In this Area Manager role, you lead the Norfolk highways maintenance operations, including winter gritting, under the Norse Highways division. You’ll steer performance, compliance, and safety for your designated area, partnering with Norfolk County Council to deliver reliable services. You’ll drive improvements, manage budgets, and develop client relationships to meet KPIs and contractual obligations. The role offers scope to shape culture, lead strategic changes, and contribute to service excellence in a national group.

Responsibilities

  • Provide operational leadership for the designated highways area
  • Lead and develop Highway Managers in line with Norse policies and values
  • Build strong client relationships and clarify priorities and service requirements
  • Achieve KPIs and provide performance reporting on operations
  • Support annual business planning and strategic/objective implementation
  • Ensure compliance with statutory/regulatory requirements across the team
  • Promote innovation, efficiency, and service quality; drive growth
  • Support organisational change and cultural development initiatives
  • Develop supply chain partnerships for resilient, cost-effective service
  • Lead improvement programmes and projects to enhance performance and service excellence
  • Oversee health, safety and wellbeing across the highways area and promote a strong safety culture

Key requirements

  • Minimum five years in a senior management or leadership role in a commercial environment
  • Track record of delivering operational, contractual, and business objectives with high performance
  • Experience managing strategic relationships with clients, stakeholders, suppliers, and delivery partners
  • Extensive highways and infrastructure sector experience with at least ten years in operations, projects, or contracts
  • Strong leadership and people management skills
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities
  • Proven ability to manage large-scale services with contractual compliance and KPI performance
  • Strong commercial and financial awareness including budget management and cost control
  • Ability to analyse complex operational issues and make decisions in fast-paced settings
  • Excellent organisational and project management skills
  • Strong negotiation and influencing skills at strategic and operational levels
