Job Description

Building SurveyorExeterUp to £45,959.1537 Hours per weekSouth West Norse is part of the Norse Group, a national, award-winning property consultancy delivering services to a range of public and private sector clients across the UK. We offer local delivery supported by national capability.With Offices in Exeter, South West Norse are dedicated to delivering professional services across a range of property management disciplines including; building surveying, architectural design, M & E engineering, project management and estate management.The role will be based in our modern open plan office on the outskirts of Exeter with its very good access off the M5 corridor making for an easy commute. We also employ an agile and flexible working strategy allowing staff to work some days at home and flex their working patterns. By its nature the role will also involve a high degree of site based survey work mainly throughout Devon.Our Active Projects:Our current workload includes a comprehensive programme of both capital and revenue repair works. Projects span a diverse range of building types and construction forms, including listed and historically significant buildings such as the Devon County Council Corporate Campus, as well as other corporate properties.The portfolio includes buildings with thatched roofs, traditional slate coverings, as well as modern metal-clad industrial units. We also deliver an annual programme of school repairs and improvements, which typically includes fire compartmentation works, re-roofing, insulation upgrades, wall repairs, and redecoration.Our farm building projects often involve Decent Homes works, including re-roofing, replacement windows, kitchen and bathroom renewals, and the installation of specialist drainage treatment systems such as septic and biological tanks.Some schemes involve complex structural repairs, delivered with support from our in-house engineers, and may include foundation works, roof structure repairs, and lintel replacements. Project values typically range from a few thousand pounds up to £500,000.There are also opportunities to undertake condition surveys and dilapidations assessments. The variety of work offers broad exposure across the profession and would suit both junior surveyors working towards APC completion and senior surveyors managing more complex and technical projects.Team and Working Environment:We operate as part of a multidisciplinary professional team, with in-house structural, civil, and MEP engineers, alongside architects, project managers, estate surveyors, and fellow building surveyors delivering projects collaboratively.We are based in a modern office with flexible working arrangements and benefit from a positive, supportive team culture focused on cooperation and successful project delivery.Main Responsibilities:

  • Undertake projects in accordance with RICS standards.
  • Provide technical and advisory guidance to clients and stakeholders and other technical team members.
  • Ensure, contribute, lead and identify on the delivery of quality assured client focused projects and services to meet the agreed clients requirement.
  • Prepare, specifications, drawings and carry out risk assessments for improvement, refurbishment and new building schemes.
  • Prepare tender documents, undertake contract administration duties/ project management and site monitoring duties of relevant contracts ensuring compliance and quality control.
  • Undertake building condition surveys, schedules of condition, dilapidations, measured surveys and planned maintenance; defect analysis to include analytical investigation, research and preparation of technical reports.
  • Participate in conservation projects to include investigation in relation to materials, repair processes, quality control and innovative methods of repair and analysis.
  • Fee earning at 90%, and contribute to the achievement of business plan objectives and targets.
  • This role requires frequent travel to other offices and sites as required.

Our Successful Candidate:We are looking for you to offer a combination of relevant commercial experience and industry recognised training for the position, demonstrated by;

  • Professional Membership of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), and be working towards (or prepared to work towards) Chartered status,
  • Ability to foster professional relationships with new and existing clients
  • Proven experience in a similar building surveying role
  • Ability to work independently with minimal support or within a large multi-disciplinary team
  • Previously worked on a variety of new build and refurbishment projects
  • Knowledge of the Building Regulations, and other relevant construction and building surveying related legislation
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to engage and negotiate with all levels of internal and external parties
  • Full UK Drivers Licence
