Consultant Chemical Pathologist in Norwich

This is a part-time consultant appointment to support our Clinical Biochemistry service, including our UKAS accreditation. The post holder will be expected to contribute to a comprehensive Clinical Biochemistry Service for all users of the laboratory. The consultant will provide expert support for analytical quality and assay implementation, diagnosis and management of biochemical disease, advice on appropriate investigations on an individual patient basis, and determine the services provided by the Clinical Biochemistry/Immunology Department within the resources made available to the Eastern Pathology Alliance (EPA). The post holder will be expected to participate in Research and Development activities within Clinical Biochemistry and Immunology, and within the Trust and the University of East Anglia, as appropriate. The Consultant will be actively involved in training, particularly clinical scientists, biomedical scientists, other allied health professionals, and students of medicine, and may also be involved in Specialty Trainees training.

Main duties of the job include:

• The Consultant Chemical Pathologist, along with other Consultants in the Department, will be responsible for the delivery of Clinical Biochemistry Services across all sites, as required.
• The Consultant will participate fully in EPA and Departmental functions, including the position of Head of Department.

Eastern Pathology Alliance (EPA) represents the networked laboratories of Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH), James Paget University Hospital (JPUH) and Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH). The Department is the 6th largest UK laboratory in volume of tests (biochemistry and immunology combined). EPA serves a population of approximately 1,100,000 and processes approximately 15 million biochemistry and immunology tests annually. The Department employs a total of 130 WTE staff and EPA has an annual budget of approximately £29 million.

The James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital King's Lynn NHS Foundation Trust are now working in partnership as the Norfolk and Waveney University Hospitals Group. All future senior medical and dental appointments will be expected to work in collaboration across the Group and, irrespective of initial job description and job plan, be willing to work on more than one hospital site, dependent on service needs.

Person Specification:

• Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
• Applicants that are UK trained must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
• Applicants that are non-UK trained will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT FRCPath in Clinical Biochemistry (by Examination), or show evidence of appropriate higher qualification.
• Postgraduate thesis.
• Capable of working in a multi-disciplinary team.
• Enthusiasm for service development and teaching.
• Demonstrates understanding and commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
• Previous responsibility for service improvement.

Standards: Thorough knowledge and understanding of GMC standards in Good Medical Practice including:

Clinical Skills:

• Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Immunology.
• Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems in Immunology.

• Specialty specific skills related to the post.
• Ability to independently investigate and manage primary and secondary immune deficiency.
• Ability to advise on the appropriate investigation of suspected immunological disease.
• Experience needed to make a substantial contribution to Immunoglobulin therapy demand management, according to NHS guidelines.

Circumstances:

• Flexible outlook on working hours.
• Must live within a 15-mile radius of the base Trust or 30 minutes travelling time.
• Ability to travel across multi-sites whilst public transport may not be available.
