Overview
Ultrasound/Radiology is committed to offering the best possible care to our patients. This role involves training to become a Sonographer and contributing to a busy 7-day ultrasound service at NNUH, with clinical and academic components leading to a Postgraduate Diploma (PgD) or MSc in Medical Ultrasound.
Responsibilities
- Work with the Sonographer Team to develop practical and academic skills required for professional qualification.
- Attend clinical training and complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound (2-year course) while undertaking full-time clinical work (paid at B6 from training commencement).
- Participate in various shift patterns to support a 7-day ultrasound service, including work at NNUH and other locations as required.
- Develop and maintain safe, effective ultrasound examination techniques, focusing on image quality, equipment safety, and patient care.
- Adopt the NNUH PRIDE values (People-focused, Respect, Integrity, Dedication, Excellence) in daily practice.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Hold a relevant degree or diploma (e.g., BSc Radiography/Midwifery or equivalent) and be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) or relevant professional body.
- Employment in, or access to, an appropriate clinical site while enrolled on the program (provided by NNUH).
- Typically, 12 months of relevant clinical practice experience following qualification.
- State registration with the HCPC or relevant professional body and a commitment to professional conduct within the College of Radiographers and HCPC codes.
- Demonstrate motivation and commitment to the Postgraduate Diploma course, with the ability to manage a rigorous training program.
- Clinical: able to learn ultrasound examination techniques, understand machine optimisation and safety, and develop skills to provide independent clinical reports with guidance.
- Professional Development: actively develop to qualify as a sonographer.
Training Details
- The new NNUH Diagnostic Assessment Centre (DAC) opened in early 2025. To support additional Sonographers, this role is a B7 level once trained, with the training pathway including full-time clinical work and online academic study.
- The post includes clinical training in Ultrasound and academic training on the Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound.
Travel, Parking and Accessibility
- Staff parking is onsite with limited spaces during core hours; spaces are more available in evenings/weekends.
- Travel Office criteria apply for parking allocation; limited capacity may require a waiting list.
- The NHS offers various travel discounts and services (bus passes, Park & Ride, etc.).
- Bicycle racks and salary sacrifice schemes are available; a Beryl charging station is onsite.
