Overview
The Pain Management Service is an integrated multidisciplinary service looking after patients with acute and long-term pain, both in an inpatient and outpatient setting. The post holder will work alongside Consultants, Specialist Nurses, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Clinical Psychologists. They will see patients in outpatients who are suffering with persistent pain and provide a comprehensive biopsychosocial clinical assessment to formulate a management plan with the patient. The post holder will also provide specialist advice to healthcare professionals managing inpatients at NNUH where persistent pain is delaying inpatient treatment or preventing discharge, and will provide support for community services as Advice & Guidance.
Main duties of the job
- The post is predominantly a clinical role, with over 75% related to direct clinical care. The remainder of the hours will represent the other pillars of advanced practice: leadership, education & training, and practice or service development.
- Undertake a combination of clinics, in-patient review and follow-up patient activity.
- Work towards health promotion and prevention and comprehensively assess patients for risk factors and early signs of illness/disease/deterioration of chronic illness.
- Draw on a diverse range of knowledge in decision-making to determine evidence-based therapeutic interventions, which may include prescribing medication where legally allowed and actively monitoring effectiveness.
- Plan and manage complete episodes of care, working in partnership with others, delegating and referring as appropriate to optimise health outcomes and resource use, and provide direct support to patients/carers and clients.
- Work in partnership with patients and support them to manage and live their lives.
- Develop knowledge to an advanced level whereby the ACP can influence all aspects of care and management of patients with persistent pain, across a population.
- Provide clinical expertise for developing and enhancing the service, ensuring evidence-based practice is inherent in all aspects of care and treatment. Contribute to clinical governance and quality improvement, disseminate knowledge, and lead clinical audit and research within the area of expertise.
- Provide clinical, educational and professional leadership, supporting staff within the Pain Management Service. Contribute to a programme of practice development for staff and deliver highly specialised clinical teaching within NNUHFT and regionally for ACPs and other medical, nursing and Allied Health Professionals. Lead practice and service development to support equitable services across the region.
- Support the delivery of a high quality, safe and compassionate healthcare service; act as a role model and demonstrate NNUHFTs PRIDE values (People-focused, Respect, Dedication, Integrity and Excellence).

DBS and NHS service
For roles involving working with children or adults, a Criminal Records and Barring Check (DBS) is required. If you are a new employee or registering with the Staff Bank, you may need to meet the DBS costs unless your salary is below a threshold. Should you be appointed, we will establish any previous NHS service via ESR IAT; submission of your application constitutes agreement to this.
