Nordson Test & Inspection, a global leader in world-class metrology equipment and inspection systems, is seeking a motivated and talented Manufacturing Engineer (X-ray Detectors) to join our team in Aylesbury, United Kingdom.
Summary of the role
The Manufacturing Engineer defines, manages, and monitors how the product will be manufactured and/or assembled on the production line both at module and final unit stages. You will be responsible for implementation of production processes and procedures, and leading productivity improvements with project-based activities. This will include new product introduction and process optimisation to reduce waste, reducing operating costs and improving quality and safety. The role entails significant responsibility. You will work on many phases or sub-tasks of projects of differing complexity, while being responsible for ensuring continuous production at our various sub-contractors.
Role and Responsibilities
- Support production activities at supplier / sub-contractor sites as well as Southampton detector related items.
- Reduce variability in manufacturing by providing standard work methods and work instructions.
- Report on production performance (process performance, yield, lead time, etc).
- Maintain statistical and traceability records.
- Supervise and train sub-contractors.
- Develop or maintain production test software ensuring product quality and traceability.
- Ensure product and process quality meets specifications required.
- Design new systems and processes to ensure the cost-effective integration of new products or for the improvement of existing ones into manufacturing operations.
- Ensure all product and system requirements are considered from initial conception to finished result.
- Support and lead continuous improvement, problem solving and process improvement activities.
- Investigate production and process issues providing technical support and training.
Skills and Qualifications
- Degree in a relevant engineering, manufacturing or science degree is required.
- 3+ years Experience of working in a production environment and working with sub-contractors.
- Experience of problem solving using standard techniques such as FMEA (Failure Mode Effects Analysis).
- Understanding of design and production costs including waste, downtime, scrap, and re-work.
- Semiconductor background or experience is an advantage.
- CAD knowledge, preferably Autodesk Inventor.
- Jig prototyping / design.
- Test data analysis. Identification of common faults.
- Image analysis / grading to specification (optical / X-ray).
- Broad general engineering capabilities (including system-level understanding).
- Understands engineering, scientific, and other technical information.
- Strong problem-solving skills and logical approach. Familiar with problem solving methodology (8D, FMEA, brainstorming, ...).
- Understands lean manufacturing and manufacturing processes.
- Ability to work in a diverse and dynamic environment.
- Ability to present data effectively.
- Good understanding of customer expectations and deliverables with an awareness of the impact of failure/cost of poor quality.
- Basic knowledge of image sensors and/or X-ray detector systems desirable.
Travel
Approximately 1 day per month visiting Nordson Southampton (Detector R&D). Opportunity to travel to other Nordson sites, suppliers and subcontractors both in the UK and overseas.
