At Nordic Outdoor, we are not like other outdoor retailers. As a Scandinavian-owned and operated company, we see ourselves as ambassadors for Scandinavian culture as much as outdoor retail. We believe that the outdoors should be accessible, enjoyable and uncomplicated, and we bring this philosophy into every interaction we have with our customers. As an independent retailer, Nordic Outdoor operates stores across Scotland, London and the Lake District, and we are excited to be opening a new flagship store in Central Edinburgh. This is an opportunity to join a growing business at an exciting stage in its journey and play a key role in establishing the newest chapter of the Nordic Outdoor story.

We are seeking enthusiastic and customer-focused Sales Assistants to join the team on both full-time and part-time contracts.

The Role

At Nordic Outdoor, we believe that great retail is about more than simply selling products. We want every customer to leave with the right product for their needs and a better understanding of why it is right for them. Our approach is built around honest advice, exceptional product knowledge and genuine customer service. Whether helping a customer choose their first waterproof jacket, advising on a walking holiday in the Highlands, or explaining the benefits of Scandinavian outdoor clothing, you will play a key role in delivering an experience that sets Nordic Outdoor apart.

Working as part of a small and passionate team, you will:

  • Deliver outstanding customer service and create memorable customer experiences
  • Drive sales through knowledgeable, consultative selling
  • Build confidence in customers through honest and informed advice
  • Develop a strong understanding of our brands, products and Scandinavian approach to outdoor living
  • Maintain high standards of visual merchandising and store presentation
  • Assist with stock management, replenishment and deliveries
  • Support the day-to-day operation of the store
  • Ensure compliance with all company procedures relating to cash handling, safety and loss prevention

About You

We’re looking for people who genuinely enjoy working with customers and take pride in delivering excellent service. Previous retail experience is preferred, particularly within premium retail, fashion, lifestyle or outdoor sectors, although a passion for learning and a positive attitude are equally important. An interest in the outdoors is beneficial but not essential, as comprehensive training will be provided.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Enjoy engaging with customers and building relationships
  • Be confident in sales situations and motivated by achieving results
  • Have strong communication skills
  • Take pride in maintaining high standards throughout the store
  • Be proactive, reliable and self-motivated
  • Enjoy working as part of a close-knit team
  • Be keen to learn about technical outdoor products and Scandinavian brands

Why Join Nordic Outdoor?

Our people are at the heart of everything we do. We believe strongly in product training and personal development, helping our teams build confidence, knowledge and valuable retail skills. Joining our team means becoming part of a growing independent retailer where your contribution will have a direct impact on the success of the business. As the business continues to expand, there will be opportunities for progression and development for ambitious individuals.

In return, we offer:

  • Competitive rate of pay
  • Ongoing product and sales training
  • Opportunities for career progression within a growing business
  • The chance to help shape the culture and success of a brand-new store

If you are passionate about retail, enjoy helping customers and would like to be part of a unique outdoor retailer with a distinctly Scandinavian perspective, we’d love to hear from you.

How to prepare for a job interview at Nordic Outdoor

Show Off Your Customer Service Skills

Retail is all about providing an exceptional customer experience, so be ready to discuss your past customer service stories. We should have examples on hand of how we've handled difficult situations or gone above and beyond to meet a customer's needs. These anecdotes will bring your application to life!

Familiarity with Point of Sale Systems

Many retail roles require us to work with Point of Sale (POS) systems, so it's a good idea to brush up on any relevant software you’ve used before. If you’re familiar with systems like Shopify or Square, don’t forget to mention this during the interview. Highlighting technical proficiency can set us apart from other candidates!

Understand Product Knowledge

Be prepared to discuss the products that the store sells and how we can contribute to their sales. Showing enthusiasm for the products and a willingness to learn can impress interviewers. We should research popular items or trends in the industry before the interview, so we can speak confidently about them.

Be Ready for Role-Playing Scenarios

Many retail interviews include role-playing scenarios where we might have to deal with a difficult customer or upsell a product. Practising these scenarios with a friend or family member can help us feel more comfortable. The key here is to showcase our problem-solving skills and ability to remain calm under pressure!
