Group Techincal Accountant

The Group Technical Accountant supports the delivery of high quality, compliant and well controlled financial reporting across the Group.

The role is responsible for researching and assessing technical accounting matters, preparing robust accounting papers and supporting the application of IFRS, UK GAAP and relevant statutory reporting requirements.

It also contributes to the implementation of new accounting standards, consolidated and subsidiary statutory reporting, M&A activity, external audit and the maintenance of Group accounting policies.

Working closely with the Senior Technical Accounting Manager and other members of Group Finance, the role provides clear and practical technical accounting guidance to Group and subsidiary finance teams, helping to ensure the consistent application of accounting requirements across the Group.

The role

  • Provide technical accounting expertise across the Group, including researching and interpreting IFRS, UK GAAP and emerging accounting standards.
  • Prepare technical accounting papers, policy assessments and guidance to support finance teams and key business decisions.
  • Assess the accounting impact of complex transactions, including acquisitions, restructurings, impairments, leases, revenue recognition and financial instruments.
  • Support M&A activity through acquisition accounting, purchase price allocations and post-acquisition financial reporting.
  • Review commercial contracts and financing arrangements to identify accounting implications and ensure compliance.
  • Support the preparation of Group consolidated financial statements, including disclosures, notes and supporting documentation.
  • Prepare and review statutory accounts for Group entities in line with IFRS, FRS 101, FRS 102 and Companies Act requirements.
  • Partner with finance teams, auditors and stakeholders to resolve technical accounting and reporting matters efficiently.
  • Maintain high-quality technical documentation, audit trails and evidence to support accounting judgements and audit requirements.
  • Drive continuous improvement in financial reporting processes, controls and reporting standards to enhance accuracy, compliance and efficiency.

We're looking for

  • ACA (or equivalent) qualified accountant with strong post-qualification experience in Technical Accounting, Accounting Advisory, Professional Practice or Audit, ideally gained within a Big 4 or leading accounting firm.
  • Strong technical knowledge of IFRS, with a good understanding of UK GAAP (FRS 101 and FRS 102) and the ability to apply accounting standards to complex business scenarios.
  • Experience preparing technical accounting papers, policy assessments and accounting guidance for significant transactions and judgemental areas.
  • Proven experience supporting the preparation, review or audit of consolidated financial statements, statutory accounts and financial reporting disclosures within a complex group environment.
  • Strong understanding of complex accounting matters, including acquisitions, restructurings, corporate transactions and audit-related issues.
  • Ability to analyse commercial agreements and business activities to assess accounting and financial reporting implications.
  • Excellent analytical, research and problem-solving skills, with strong attention to detail and professional judgement.
  • Effective communicator who can clearly explain complex accounting concepts to both finance and non-finance stakeholders.
  • Highly organised, collaborative and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience of M&A, acquisition accounting, financial reporting improvements or implementing new accounting standards would be advantageous.
