Department Overview

Product Control is a key function within the Finance department, interacting with virtually every part of the firm's businesses, products and technology systems.

It is a global function with staff located in London, New York, India and across the Asia Pacific region.

Product Control is primarily responsible for understanding, substantiating and controlling the daily trading balance sheet and income statement for Nomura, analyzing the daily trading activities, explaining and reporting the trading divisions' profits and losses whilst ensuring that the Finance governance framework is maintained.

It supports the execution of regular independent price verification to verify the values of positions held by the trading desks.

Additionally, Product Control reviews and opines on new products and transactions, ensuring full compliance with governance requirements and efficient deployment of the firm's financial resources.

Product Controllers are expected to have a deep understanding of the products they monitor and the strategies used by the trading desk to generate revenue for Nomura.

The function has become increasingly technical in content and offers a challenging and interesting role, suited to dynamic, bright, and ambitious individuals with a drive to succeed.

Role Description

The role is the EMEA Head of Equities Product Control.

The equities business is rapidly expanding in scope, scale, and complexity, trading a diverse range of products across financing and solutions, including exotic interest rates and reinsurance products such as variable annuity and regulatory capital financing transactions.

As the primary Finance point of contact for new products and new transactions, the candidate will perform assessments of transactions including PL recognition and reserving, financial resource metrics, and reporting.

The role supports analysis and optimisation of financial resource utilisation across the desk and works closely with Product and Regional GM management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Managing the reporting of a comprehensive daily trading PL and balance sheet, including PL explanation with detailed commentary covering PL drivers, trading activity, key exposures, and market context.
  • Carrying out intelligent analysis and challenging the business performance, trading activity, deployment of financial resources, and adherence to governance requirements.
  • Conducting new deal analysis with responsibility for coordinating finance‑wide reviews of new products and transactions, reporting conclusions to senior finance management.
  • Owning the business relationship, opining and validating PL recognition challenges and reserve requirements.
  • Responsible for financial resource and return calculations on new transactions, understanding all aspects of financial resource consumption such as capital, balance sheet, and leverage exposure for the EMEA Structured Rates business.
  • Stakeholder management across Trading, Risk, Operations, and IT.
  • Monitoring key controls and reconciliations, owning adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Constantly challenging the status quo and seeking opportunities to improve the control environment, maintaining best‑practice control standards.
  • Ensuring all activities are carried out in full compliance with Product Controls policies, procedures, and Nomura's internal policies and standards.
  • Representing Finance's interests on key firm‑wide projects.
  • Managing a team of 2 senior reportees in London supported by 6 offshore members.
  • Key Skills And Experience Required
  • Relevant product control experience with a strong understanding and experience of Equity products.
  • Track record of senior stakeholder management such as trading heads, regulatory bodies, and CFO.
  • Track record of effective people management, developing talent and optimising resources across a multi‑location operating model.
  • Ability to manage time‑critical matters alongside medium‑term workload and project management.
  • Strong communication skills able to collaborate across regions and departments.
  • Attention to detail with analytical capability, able to deep‑dive into performance and financial resource metrics.
  • Track record of improving controls and processes and adding value to stakeholders.
  • Qualified accountant.
