Overview

PURPOSE & IMPACT: This role is known for being the packaging business partner for a Segment and a Cluster - an enabler to Packaging Innovation, Sustainability and Value creation opportunities. Acting as a technical, consumer and sustainability champion, highlighting opportunities, driving change and ensuring that the programme delivers competitive advantage. The Packaging Development Manager is integrated in generating and delivering the Packaging strategy as well as Segment and Cluster programmes across Packaging for Innovation, Renovation, Value Creation and Sustainability. The Packaging Development Manager is a line manager of packaging resources and operates with support of the overall Packaging Community of Practice.

The PDM is responsible for the Packaging Go To Market Excellence for a Cluster (incl. User experience, Activations, Printing, Sustainability Reporting, Compliance, CPM/Consumer reviews) engaging with Clusters and with external stakeholders (like authorities and industry associations), to be informed, influence and build brand and business in packaging and sustainability reputation. This requires a strong understanding of the local culture, markets, media and language.

Responsibilities

  • Support Packaging Lead in defining, Championing and Delivering Packaging Strategy across Segments and/or Clusters (Innovation, Sustainability, F4G…)
  • Drives projects prioritisation, input into the Innovation process, technical decisions, consulting with relevant Packaging teams, and escalating to Packaging Lead when needed
  • Supports Packaging resources allocation and prioritisation
  • Lead and develop a performing team of Packaging individuals across multiple locations
  • Drive a performing Packaging Community of Practice
  • As first POC – support the creation of Segment and/or Cluster Packaging pipelines with Business partners (Marketing, RDQ, Insights)
  • Integrated in Win as One Innovation process with Segments/Clusters for their Pipeline creation, in line with AP
  • Develop Packaging Design capabilities and be an advocate for consumer experience improvement via Packaging.
  • Responsible for Quality in Execution/Go to Market Excellence for Packaging (incl. User experience, Activations, Printing, Sustainability, Compliance, CPM/Consumer reviews)
  • Ensure requirements for packaging sustainability/legal/tax are delivered on time in full for Segments/Clusters
  • Lead or effectively delegate packaging development from ideation to launch phase for Segment and/or Cluster projects according to agreed milestones and timings
  • Give accurate & informative input to gate documents for packaging elements of projects
  • Works with external partners, e.g. suppliers, to deliver the work programme as required
  • Lead or effectively delegate as relevant - part Fuel for Growth Packaging programme delivery
  • Responsible for the co-creation of fuel for growth pipeline for Segment and Cluster
  • Champion Packaging Sustainability strategy across segments and clusters
  • Deliver the sustainability packaging programme working with SU Implementation teams and Co-Packers
  • Ensure requirements for packaging sustainability/legal/tax are delivered on time in full

Qualifications

  • Relevant Science Degree – eg Technical, Materials Science, Packaging, Engineering
  • Extensive (6/8+ years) proven experience working in FMCG packaging development role
  • Proficient in English language and business languages for the MU/Cluster
  • Advanced understanding of Local packaging regulation and legal labelling is a strong benefit
  • Track record of successful packaging innovation, renovation and sustainability
  • Track record of successful packaging project management within FMCG
  • Track record of balancing different priorities and delivery to ensure maximum business impact, Leadership within a matrix
  • Eager to understand and anticipate consumer behaviour
