Company / Position
We are currently working with a fast-growing building services and renewable energy business that is seeking a Design Manager to join its expanding team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role within a highly ambitious organisation delivering high-specification heating, ventilation, renewable energy and MEP projects across the South East.
The business specialises in the design and delivery of mechanical building services solutions, with projects incorporating technologies such as heating systems, ventilation, air conditioning, heat pumps (ASHP & GSHP), Solar PV, Battery Storage and MVHR across both residential and commercial developments.
This role offers a high degree of flexibility, with office attendance typically required one to two days per week, alongside occasional site visits when required.
Responsibilities
Leading and managing the technical design function across heating, ventilation, renewable energy and MEP projects.
Managing and mentoring a small team of Design Engineers, reviewing work and maintaining high technical standards.
Taking ownership of projects from design handover through to successful delivery.
Producing detailed Stage 4 and Stage 5 technical designs for heating, ventilation and associated mechanical building services systems.
Designing renewable energy solutions including heat pumps, Solar PV, MVHR and battery storage where applicable.
Carrying out heat loss, heat gain and ventilation calculations to ensure systems are correctly specified and compliant.
Producing technical drawings, schematics, specifications and supporting design documentation.
Liaising directly with clients, architects, consultants and contractors throughout the design process.
Providing technical support to installation teams and resolving design queries during project delivery.
Managing design workloads, ensuring projects are delivered on time and to a high standard.
Supporting the ongoing development of BIM processes and design procedures.
Working closely with senior leadership to continually improve design operations and project delivery.
Experience / Skills Required
Previous design experience within Building Services, Mechanical Building Services, MEP or HVAC.
Strong experience designing both heating and ventilation systems is desired.
Experience managing projects from concept through to detailed technical design.
Previous team leadership or management experience would be advantageous, although experienced Senior Design Engineers looking to step into management are also encouraged to apply.
Renewable energy design experience (Heat Pumps, Solar PV, MVHR or Battery Storage) would be advantageous but is not essential.
Strong knowledge of design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, IES, Hevacomp or similar.
Knowledge of BIM processes and RIBA design stages would be beneficial.
Ability to produce detailed technical calculations, schematics and design documentation.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
Strong problem-solving ability with excellent attention to detail.
This role could suit an experienced Design Manager, Mechanical Design Engineer, HVAC Design Engineer or a Senior Design Engineer looking to take the next step into a leadership position.
If you have strong experience designing both heating and ventilation systems and are looking to join an innovative, growing business where you can make a genuine impact, we would love to hear from you.
