Principal Examiner – Functional Skills English

NOCN are seeking to recruit a Principal Examiner for Functional Skills English.

Purpose and Objectives:

  • Lead on setting and maintaining educational standards for Functional Skills English Qualifications.
  • Analyse data and write reports about the performance of candidates to support the teaching and learning process.
  • Advise NOCN managers about ways to improve the policies and processes that underpin the examinations lifecycle.
  • Contribute to the conduct of the appeals procedure as required to help ensure that candidates receive fair examination results.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the design of examinations in conjunction with the Examinations and Awarding Manager and the Senior Examinations Officer.
  • Advise and support writers to ensure that examinations and examination items are developed to the required educational standard and in line with NOCN requirements.
  • Participate in decisions about approving examinations as fit for use by candidates.
  • Participate in the moderation and standardisation of marking including by undertaking marker training, mentoring new markers, sampling marked scripts, analysing data and providing feedback to markers.
  • Participate in standard setting meetings to set grade boundaries for examinations.
  • Analyse performance data and recommend action to ensure examinations are fair and comparable.
  • Compile Principal Examiner reports to support the improvement of teaching and learning.
  • Participate in centre training and centre events.
  • Participate in Principal Examiner meetings with examinations managers.
