We’re looking for a highly creative, technically skilled and safety‑conscious In‑House Perfumer & Fragrance Innovation Lead to shape the future of scent at Tropic. This is a rare opportunity to take ownership of fragrance across a fast‑growing, purpose‑led beauty brand with its own labs, chemists and UK manufacturing facility. You’ll define how Tropic products smell, how fragrances are created and communicated, and how we bring more development in house. Fragrance is one of the most powerful parts of the product experience – it can transform a routine, create memory and make a product truly loved. At Tropic, we want beautiful, safe and consciously formulated fragrances that enhance our products without compromising our values. You’ll work across skincare, body care, hair care, wellbeing and fine fragrance – refining existing scents, developing new directions and creating a clean fine fragrance range with the quality and emotional pull of prestige perfumery. This role is for a perfumer who combines creativity with technical judgement: someone who can dream in fragrance notes but also understands stability, allergens, IFRA standards and how scent behaves in real product bases.
Key Responsibilities
- Fragrance creation and product scent ownership
- Take ownership of Tropic’s fragrance world across skincare, body care, hair care, wellbeing and fine fragrance.
- Review, refine and optimise the scent profiles of existing Tropic products.
- Create new fragrance directions for future launches, limited editions, seasonal collections and brand moments.
- Develop fragrance briefs, olfactive concepts, mood boards and scent stories aligned with Tropic’s values and positioning.
- Build a clear and cohesive fragrance architecture for Tropic – defining our signature scent style across categories.
- Work closely with product development, R&D, brand, marketing and manufacturing to ensure each fragrance enhances the product experience.
- Clean fine fragrance development
- Lead development of Tropic’s future clean fine fragrance range, with the sophistication, longevity and emotional depth of prestige perfumery.
- Explore natural‑origin materials, essential oils, isolates and responsibly sourced aroma compounds.
- Build fragrance stories around mood, memory, nature, wellbeing, identity and ritual.
- Support testing, refinement and evaluation across different fragrance formats and applications.
- Safe and responsible fragrance
- Champion Tropic’s approach to safe, conscious fragrance creation – considering allergens, sensitisation risk, IFRA standards and cosmetic compliance across all product types.
- Evaluate natural fragrance materials with scientific and regulatory awareness, recognising that natural does not automatically mean risk‑free.
- Create clear internal and consumer education around Tropic’s fragrance philosophy: what we use, what we avoid and why.
- Stay close to developments in fragrance safety, allergen labelling, green chemistry and sustainable fragrance materials.
- In‑house fragrance manufacturing
- Help Tropic build capability to manufacture more fragrances in house – covering compounding, dilution, storage, quality control and scale‑up.
- Establish internal systems for raw material evaluation, fragrance trials, batch consistency and documentation.
- Assess equipment, workflow and supplier requirements needed for in‑house fragrance creation.
- Partner with external fragrance houses and suppliers where needed, while building Tropic’s internal expertise.
- Aromatherapy, wellbeing and education
- Bring informed perspective on aromatherapy, essential oils and the emotional impact of scent – helping explore how fragrance can support mood, ritual and wellbeing.
- Create scent experiences that feel beautiful, purposeful and emotionally resonant.
- Develop fragrance education for consumers, Ambassadors and internal teams – covering scent families, notes, natural materials, aromatherapy principles and product experience.
- Support launch content, training materials and behind‑the‑scenes storytelling to make perfumery feel accessible and exciting.
What We’re Looking For
You’ll be a trained perfumer with genuine love of natural fragrance, fine fragrance and conscious beauty – creative and sensory‑led, but also technically rigorous and safety‑aware. You may have worked in a fragrance house, beauty brand, natural perfumery studio, aromatherapy business or fine fragrance setting.
Essential
- Formal training or qualifications in perfumery, fragrance creation, natural perfumery or cosmetic fragrance development.
- A strong understanding of fragrance formulation, olfactive structure, scent families, raw materials and fragrance evaluation.
- Knowledge of IFRA standards, allergens, sensitisation risk and cosmetic fragrance compliance.
- Experience developing fragrances for skincare, body care, hair care and fine fragrance.
- Excellent sensory evaluation skills and the ability to give clear, structured feedback on scent.
- A creative nose with strong commercial judgement.
- The ability to work collaboratively across R&D, product development, regulatory, manufacturing, brand and marketing.
- A passion for building in‑house fragrance capability and bringing creation closer to home.
Desirable
- Aromatherapy qualifications or recognised training in essential oil use.
- Experience developing fine fragrance, eau de parfum, body mists or fragrance‑led wellbeing products.
- Experience with natural fragrance, isolates, upcycled or sustainable aroma ingredients.
- Experience compounding, manufacturing or scaling fragrances in house, including lab setup and documentation.
- Experience creating consumer or educational content around fragrance, aromatherapy or product scent.
- Knowledge of green chemistry, sustainable sourcing or low‑allergen formulation strategies.
