This is a part‑time consultant appointment to support our Clinical Biochemistry service, including our UKAS accreditation. The post holder will be expected to contribute to a comprehensive Clinical Biochemistry Service for all users of the laboratory. The consultant will provide expert support for analytical quality and assay implementation, diagnosis and management of biochemical disease, advice on appropriate investigations on an individual patient basis, and determine the services provided by the Clinical Biochemistry/Immunology Department within the resources made available to the Eastern Pathology Alliance (EPA). The post holder will be expected to participate in Research and Development activities within Clinical Biochemistry and Immunology, and within the Trust and the University of East Anglia, as appropriate. The Consultant will be actively involved in training, particularly clinical scientists, biomedical scientists, other allied health professionals, and students of medicine.
Responsibilities
- Deliver Clinical Biochemistry Services across all sites within the EPA.
- Participate fully in EPA and Departmental functions, including the position of Head of Department.
- Provide expert support for analytical quality and assay implementation.
- Diagnose and manage biochemical disease and advise on appropriate investigations at an individual patient basis.
- Take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
- Offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems in Immunology.
- Investigate and manage primary and secondary immune deficiency.
- Advise on the appropriate investigation of suspected immunological disease.
- Contribute substantively to immunoglobulin therapy demand management according to NHS guidelines.
- Participate in training—including clinical scientists, biomedical scientists, allied health professionals, and medical students—and support specialty trainees training.
- Maintain good working relationships with colleagues and support service development.
- Travel across multiple sites; ability to travel when public transport may not be available.
- Live within a 15‑mile radius of the base Trust or within 30 minutes travelling time.
Person Specification & Qualifications
- Full and specialist registration (and licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
- Applicants who are UK trained must be holders of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
- Applicants who are non‑UK trained must provide evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
- FRCPath in Clinical Biochemistry (by Examination) or equivalent higher qualification.
- Postgraduate thesis (desirable).
- Demonstrated understanding and commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
- Excellent communication skills (written and oral) with patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies.
- Empathy and sensitivity, ability to listen and take in others’ perspectives; caring approach to patients.
- Knowledge and understanding of GMC standards in Good Medical Practice, including: good clinical care, maintaining good medical practice, good relationships with patients, good working relationships with colleagues, good teaching and training, professional behaviour and probity, delivery of good acute clinical care.
